The US has actually concerns about another #China led construction project on #Cambodia shore #Darasakor west #Sihanoukville equipped with a long air strip and a deep water port. ‘It has everything for a military stronghold. Ream looks like a distraction’says expert
Thanks, I think there are probably multiple Chinese led projects right now that are scaring US. I mean, most of these are probably just projects that allow China to install spy stations or dual use facilities or non-permanent PLA presence so that Chinese ships can make port calls and such. It's a big mistake to just open up 1 "base". You get the same amount of complaining with 1 base as you would with 20, so you might as well just try 20 at a time. The next obvious place for a facility/base is in the southern part of Mayanmar to allow them to spy on activities at Andaman and be used to attack naval ships trying to get to Malacca straits.

I found it amusing that someone said the puny facility China is building in Ream is going to be a problem for Vietnam or Malaysia. Nothing surprises me anymore. It is just funny that people buy into this nonsense that non-permanent/dual use facitlies China build in Cambodia/Myanmar is more threatening to other ASEAN countries than they are to US military.

The other thing is America's continued heavy hand in this development is simply driving Cambodia to China's arms. The more US threatens Cambodia, the more Cambodia feels the need to work with China to defend itself against Western aggression. Terrible moves. Even Blake Herzinger has said the same thing. Why would you continue to demonize Cambodian government when they are trying to pretend to be neutral in order to attract Western investment? Why not use that to pull Cambodia into more neutral position?

Why not just help to build up Myanmar Navy, ISR, A2AD forces instead? A base there will just do too India what you are describing the US doing to Cambodia. China is wooing India right now, they are trying to de-escalate tensions. Any China base in Cambodia or Myanmar will go against everything China is currently saying about security.

If you've been reading India press, nobody in India is viewing China favorably. After 2020, China is enemy #1 for India security establishment.

China is actually already building up Myanmar military quite a bit. The current Myanmar security is a mess. It's probably not a great time for China to put a "base" there. But long term, it makes sense to have dual use facilities in southern part of Myanmar that can be used to spy on incoming ships and a place where they can host their ships or where they can land aircraft. Again, all of this is contingent on improved Myanmar security and improving relationship between the militaries.

That's because Vietnam understands China shares a land border with it. When white people say don't fight a land war in Asia, they really meant don't fight a land war vs China. If Vietnam want to be dumb, they will lose all their holdings in SCS and probably trashed in the north again as a warning.

What anti-China Westerners think Vietnam will do during a Taiwan contingency: "Launch a guerrilla war on China" (exactly how to fight a guerrilla war of aggression is too minor a detail for them).

What Vietnamese nationalists think Vietnam will do during a Taiwan contingency: "Let's invade Cambodia!".

What Vietnam will do during a Taiwan contingency: not do a thing and accidentally walk out on every obligatory Tsai (or whoever) speech at international conferences.

Anyway U.S. seems to be blind to Cambodia-Vietnam dynamics. Trying to coerce Cambodia to give up its military cooperation with China while trying to woo Vietnam into its orbit and potentially militarily build up Vietnam will not work for the U.S.
