A base in Equatorial Guinea has been mentioned as a possibility, it is 4000km from Gibraltar and 5000km from Brazil. There is a serious lack of security in these waters, which gives the perfect excuse to set up a base.

The Gulf of Guinea is a strategically important shipping route with 25% of Africa's maritime trade passing through the region. Escalating piracy in the Gulf disrupts trade; a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) base in Equatorial Guinea would improve Chinese anti-piracy capabilities in West Africa, a stated goal of the FOCAC 2018 action plan.

China has made significant investments in the latter's infrastructure, including roads and hydroelectric power facilities. Bata already has a Chinese-built deep-water commercial port on the Gulf of Guinea, as well as highways that link the city to Gabon and the interiors of Central Africa.
