Really geared toward finance sector here. A lot of money there. Now China's finance sector can loose their reliance on Oracle. In this case, they already invited several financial companies to share their GaussDB usage.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of those sectors where Chinese gov't tell SOEs to use domestic product

Yeah was a mistake relying on US companies/tech for such critical/sensitive projects..can't imagine the US relying on Chinese software for storing such critical DB. NO WAY THE US can even tolerate that. China should be more careful. I understand Chinese software companies were not up to par, but they need to invest more into this . So seems the sanctions are actually a good thing in this regard.

Any info or English language sources on what kind of database is this? Relational, document, time series, column oriented, vector based or other? What kind of transaction model and consistency model does it support? Are there are any metrics or estimates available as to scalability factor when scaled horizontally? Or is it mentioned which Oracle products this database is intended to replace?

China's software industry saw a total revenue of 4.3238 trillion yuan (about $599.8 billion) in the first five months of 2023, up 13.3% YoY, while the profits amounted to 492.2 billion yuan, up 12.2%, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Any news of China moving off of American platforms is great.

China should plan to only use its own software + open source software, and it should only use open source software where it is a major contributor.

It should also promote the global adoption of such open source solutions. This would help with its reputation, since people in software generally love open source. Indeed, I'd say the way to win vs. America in software is to cast them as the "closed source, sanctions happy, knowledge imperialist" regime. You win in software by creating win-win solutions, not zero sum games, for the Global South.
