Saw this a while back too but wasn't sure if it need be a new thread or part of the type 056 thread? Can't seem to find more info but I am curious on displacement and type of armament. It appears the RHIB hangar is gone but a helo hangar takes that space.

we have an export thread in the strategic defense section. You should post it there for smaller projects like this. We can probably post the C28A projects in F-22P thread once we start getting photos for it.

Re: F91 Chinese OPV Export

The Chinese F91 OPV export vessel looks like it will be a capable Offshoire Patrol Vessel at 1,800 tons.

The first vessel for Nigeria has now been launched from an order of two vessels.

They appear to be affordable and of a modern design and capability...and I would not be surprised to see more of them purschased by other 2nd and 3rd tier nations.

People's Online Daily said:
The first new-type patrol ship F91 that China plans to export to Nigeria has been launched. It will be delivered in the middle of 2014 as scheduled. It will become the first ship of the Nigerian navy's P18N project. During an interview, Major General Yin Zhuo pointed out that the F91 is equipped with three cannons and allows the take-off and landing of helicopters, which will considerably enhance its ability to search for suspect targets.

In early April 2012, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan confirmed that Nigeria would purchase two 1,800-ton offshore patrol ships from China. According to the plan, the construction of the hull and deck of the first ship in the project would be carried out in China. The rest of the system installation, integration and debugging will be carried out in Nigeria.

This ship will be tailored to the needs of the Nigerian navy, and will be used to carry out such missions as guarding oilfields, patrolling the seas, protecting fisheries, carrying out marine supervision, carrying out search and rescue, and controlling pollution. After its completion, it will become the largest and the most advanced ship in the Nigerian fleet.

According to Yin Zhuo, the F91 does not carry any anti-ship missile, but has a 76-mm medium-caliber cannon and two 30-mm caliber cannons. The former has a high firing rate, and can do more serious damage. The latter can attack close-range targets.

There F91 is also equipped with a hangar at the rear of the deck. As a take-off and landing platform for helicopters, it can not only assist warships in large-scale searches, but also guide ships to intercept suspect targets in the vicinity.

Looks like a pretty capable coastal defense ship however Iwonder why China doesn't just export the T 056.

Wasn't there an order from Bangladesh for 2 such units? But for those countries that want a larger tonnage ship, that's what the F91 will be.

The Type 056 is significantly more advanced, more heavily armed, and probably more costly.

I think nations like Nigeria may not be able to afford them. And with some of the tech (the AAW and ASM systems in particular), the PLAN may not be willing to share it just yet.

Anyhow, who knows for sure? Just some thoughts.

Re: F91 Chinese OPV Export

It looks a quite nice vessel. Nigeria perhaps wants a ship like this as opposed to a type 56, because its main security concerns are against non-state actors. Pirates, oil smugglers, drugs, terrorists. Nigeria's neighbours tend to have their own internal security issues and tend to be too busy just surviving as to have an interest in going to war with another soverign state.

The type 56 is more optimised towards full out war against nation states, though it can work as patrol vessel as well. The F91 is more optimised as a cheaper vessel, more optimised against assymetric threats. Thus suggest this vessel would suit Nigeria more than a type 56. Externally it looks quite nice. I am sure the capital costs are modest, as to how internal fit out and quality compares with a more expensive western OPV I have on idea. My guess is that is costs a relatively small amount, what running costs are I dont know. Given an OPV is relatively simple (compared to a cruiser), it is likely to use very mature, low risk and proven technology, thus the internal differences are likely to be small.

If it turns out to work well for Nigeria, China could end up selling these to many many navies. It has a helicopter which gives it a lot of flexibility. Nice size, nice design, looks simple robust and cost effective.
