The Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL), Admiral Muhammad Ali, has stated that the navy is currently assessing the need to acquire an aircraft carrier to enhance non-combat military operations.

"It seems that we need an aircraft carrier for non-war military operations," he said at a press conference before attending a Navy leadership meeting at the headquarters of the TNI-AL in East Jakarta on Thursday.

Looks like CSSC probably got the message!

Interestingly, media outlets as divergent as

responded to Admiral Muhammad Ali's proposal with ridicule.

TBF, a full blown aircraft carrier is most likely too expensive for the Indonesians to acquire, sustain and operate in any reasonable manner, but a flattop limited to rotary wing — say an export version of the Type 075 — might be somewhat more digestible.

Luckily we already have a thread for this:

IMO, a real carrier modded from a Type 075 shouldn't cost that much more. Just need to slightly extend the deck for a angled landing strip.

A Type 075 might be sufficient for the Indonesians given that they apparently want an "

" so fixed wing capabilities shouldn't be a priority.

CSSC delivered a Type 071E to the Royal Thai Navy a couple years back, so it wouldn't be a stretch for a Type 075 derivative to be exported in the not so distant future. CSSC obviously sees a market for it if they're exhibiting models of it at trade shows.

However, the odds of China exporting an aircraft carrier are pretty slim. The only country that has a defense budget big enough to reasonably sustain and operate an aircraft carrier, and would potentially be willing to import a newly constructed hull rather than build domestically or buy used would be Saudi Arabia.

The Royal Saudi Navy is reportedly looking to expand, and is due to receive four frigates based on the

Freedom class LCS. If the Americans can somehow convince the Saudis to spend good money on a derivative of the Freedom class, then maybe it is plausible for the Chinese to sell them a new aircraft carrier too . . .

In all seriousness, there isn't going to be an export market for a flattop akin to or based on the Type 076 anytime soon, but if there was, how much more would it cost than the Type 075, assuming China is even willing to expose its EMALS technology to the export market?
