I wonder if there is any reason to use CODOG going forward? At present time, China's technology should be good enough that it can use CODAG everywhere.
I'm guessing simplicity and cost. And if there's ever going to be a use case of CODOG in the PLAN going forward, then it'd probably be cheaper, smaller-sized ships.
actually, they really should go for IEPS everywhere. Idk why for coast guard, they can't just do that.
IEPS is more technologically-demanding and complex than other types of conventional propulsion systems, and that they are heavier (if not also bulkier). That's why no warships that are FFG-sized and below (where space is a premium) have ever gone with IEPS.
On the other hand, the usage of IEPS on future PLAN warships that are DDG-sized and above is certainly a possibility. Besides, China already has her first use case of IEPS on the 076 LHD.
As for the coast guard cutters - They are generally smaller than warships, and for their common use cases (which is to loiter around and patrolling territorial waters and EEZ), why even bother with going for expensive and complex propulsion systems anyway?
