Who do we should believe?

General Zhu Heping says
General says weak foundation in sosphicated machinery is among the obstacles facing the PLA in its efforts to upgrade its home-made fighters

.A weak foundation in building sophisticated machinery and a lack of innovation are major obstacles for the People's Liberation Army in upgrading its latest domestically produced jet fighters, military experts say.

Major General Zhu Heping - vice-president of the Air Force Command Academy and the grandson of the father of the Red Army, Zhu De - talked about the constraints facing the PLA in an interview with the South China Morning Post.

He said one key hindrance was the state of the country's machinery industry, even though the PLA had been upgrading to a more hi-tech force for a decade. Another problem was the lack of innovation in the industry sector.

Zhu said those 10 years, under the rule of former president Hu Jintao and former premier Wen Jiabao, had seen crucial gains made in military modernisation.

"Taking the air force as an example, we managed to take a huge step forward by replacing second-generation jet fighters with third-generation ones as the main force," he said.

Zhu said big strides had been made in developing anti-aircraft weapons and giving information technology a bigger role.

"More importantly, we saw an enormous improvement in the quality of our pilots," he said. "At present you can hardly find an officer who does not hold a bachelor's degree or higher."

More importantly, we saw an enormous improvement in the quality of our pilots. At present you can hardly find an officer who does not hold a bachelor's degree or higherHowever, Zhu said, Chinese industry had not progressed quite so rapidly. "To be honest, we've overlooked the problem of how difficult, complicated and time-consuming it is for us to upgrade the machinery industry in our country," he said

Zhu cited as an example the fact that the air force had to buy foreign engines for home-made fighter jets.

The person closer to the engine development.
It is hard to tell but i believe the customer, PLAAF general Zhu, because he is making a cool and honest critic, he is not belittling the chinese capability, he is justy making a critic about what are the weaknesses of the Chinese aircraft industry

I'm sorry, but which parts of either article really contradicts the other, and why does one have to choose either?

"Good progress" and "weak foundation" are such vague and abstract phrases, that they could mean almost anything the user wants them to. Nor does General Zhu refute anything Chen says or vice versa.

I know those with first hand experience would agree that there should be greater focus on critical thinking in the education system, but according to Ma and Antony, either China hasn't accomplished anything, or they simply can't. Neither stance makes much sense considering recent events.

of course official Chinese sources never lie

Did I say they don't? I don't live in the black and white world that you do. It's people like you that think if it comes from the West or anyone on the side of the West they're incapable of lying until they say something you don't agree with. That's why you would bother to post it because you give them more credibility even when they're on the outside certainly over the Mainland. Look at the New York Times, the gods of news journalism, and how they fabricated evidence to make the case for the Iraq War. The fact is you won't believe any source from any country if it doesn't serve the conclusion you prefer.

General zhu is not very well informed of the latet development of Chinese engine. I think after being brief by the chief designer zhang enhe, he will wholeheartedly eat back his words.

We should believe the customer (General Zhu) over the supplier.

Chen Maozhang, expert of Chinese aero engines and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in a recent interview that "The research and manufacture project is currently going very well,".

Perhaps, Major General Zhu Heping was expecting wide deployment of indigenous engines but we have seen them on J-11Bs, J-15s, etc. Progress there is in research and manufacture, just not in mass scale hence the need to import.
