Chinese Economics Thread

I'm not sure how accurate this report is, but I'm getting really tired of long-winded Party Jargon and vague ideological talk, if the eventual objective is to crack down on harmful Business practices/exploitation, encourage income inequality and ensure future economic sustainability, ya know, the things people actually care about/understands then they should emphasise it as such and get the support of the people. It mostly sounds like it controls for control's sake or control for to better realign with states' long term plan(whatever it might be), again, while the Communist Party might be able to produce tangible governing result so far, its PR really is baffling and snore inducing.

I'm also having great doubt on the top-down approach, which almost always works worse than a bottom-up approach. If this is mishandled then it could have really negative consequences.

My rule of thumb is, if you don't have the whole story, don't speculate.

Like that time China removed the term limits for the presidency. At the time, I thought it was a bad idea, as it would disrupt the existing process of power transfer.

Turned out however, that the Presidency was largely a ceremonial position, and only it had a term limit. The positions with real power, General Secretary to the Party, or Chief Military Commander, did NOT have term limits.

So what Xi really did was to end the tradition of shadow power that started from Deng.

Meaning US allies are getting upset at the US demanding they choose sides. No need for clarification if allies were 100% on board.

Those 'allies' will be signing the China-led FTA RCEP this November.

And ASEAN is rushing to close Code of Conduct in the South China Sea with China.

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on the ten member nations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) early this month to stand up to China in their territorial disputes in the South China Sea and they can bank on US support.

ASEAN response was expectedly cool to the US call. “We don’t want to get trapped by this rivalry,” Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said.

This dumbass is like, "ACKSHUALLY POVERTY ALLEVIATION BAD REEEE!!!!!"

This is one of the ugliest and most disgraceful things I’ve read recently and that’s saying a lot given the amount of propaganda spewed by the Trump administration.Let’s step back and think about it. Liberal democracies gained an advantage over the Eastern block because the people were better off economically. When defectors like Victor Belenko visited U.S. super markets and saw how well stocked everything is, that changed their minds.

What these writers are advocating reminds me of an old Chinese adage: 宁要社会主义的草,不要资本主义的苗. Only difference is that the situation is reversed.

Hi hullopilllw,

The ASEAN will hedge both side and will extract concession. My country the Phillipine will benefit a lot from COC with China, it will have a framework to work upon with peaceful intent without outside interference (US, AUSTRALIA &JAPAN), it will lessen tension and delegitimize the FON of the US.

This is why it's so hard for any US or EU companies to move out of China.

China Imports Soar, Up Almost 90% Year-Over-Year (With Video)

.... "Companies that just say, we want to leave China, go to Mexico. Well, that's a good strategy. But the products you're looking for, are they even made in Mexico? If they are, where do the raw materials come from, because they're likely coming from China," Gardner said. "Mexico, while it is a good, strong market, it does not have the production capacity or the diversity of industries that China has. Nobody does."

Not specifically applicable to China but interesting nonetheless. Does provide an explanation for why Asian countries like China, TW or S. Korea that work so much harder than Europe or America still have a lower GDP per capita. Potentially it could be a great thing for China because culturally its more driven around value and efficiency than Japan or German which care more about precision and mastery.

Bloomberg New Economy: China is Winning the Trade War With Trump
After four years of relentless effort by President Donald Trump to push back against China, his campaign reached new heights (or lows) Friday when he sought to ban new downloads of WeChat, China’s ubiquitous messaging and payments app, and the wildly popular video-sharing app TikTok.

Nevertheless, the final scorecard is already in: On just about every metric that matters, China is ahead. At every turn, Trump seems to have been outplayed and outsmarted throughout the global trade war that began shortly after he took office.

Trump was not "outplayed" or "outsmarted".

China didn't do anything particularly earth-shattering. There wasn't some genius grand strategy at work here. All that happened was that the Chinese government and the Chinese people continued to do what worked for them for the past few decades - plan ahead, work hard, anticipate change and united as one.

Thinking that somehow tariffs will magically make the US more competive is naive and misplaced. Tariffs don't change anything fundamental. If things were that easy, trust me Trump wouldn't be the first one to have thought of that.

Yeah, I don't think China is trying to really cause damage to the USA in a deliberate manner like the USA is absolutely hoping for them to do so that they can go on there invasion binges but instead is simply just reacting with calculated moves to minimize damage to China as much as possible while letting what ever evens happening in the USA do the work for them. I mean that the issues with regards to there racism, there economic woes and the pandemic are all on them, China has done nothing to make the problem in the USA worse or even cause those issues in the first place. That is what makes it so devastating for the USA in the sense that none of there situational problems are things that you can go to war against China for directly, hence they cannot solve there problems because they prefer easy solutions (note that most in there leadership is old and even the billionaires are all very old and cannot take there wealth into the afterlife) and once a situation comes that requires a hard and carefully thought out solution, they always fail in those moments and hence there isn't much they can do unless they adopt a more Chinese mindset which is something they can never do. Hence all it would take is the USA do compete against China in a more responsible manner to compete against China in a more even handle manner but now, that kind of solution is permanently closed hence all they can do is face the music.
