So its been discussed before that power consumption got reduced because of the slow down from lockdowns, and this Reuter article doesn't provide numbers or details on China's coal inventories, other than coal import which accounts for 7% of total coal consumption. So how does it turn into a power supply risk even if the coal output is high? is low quality coal really that significantly less energy dense?

Also there's this article from Bloomberg back in march that maybe related to this problem.

China Orders Power Firms to Replenish Coal as Prices Remain High

The article is full of bs. I used to run coal trading side business and most of the contracts for thermal coal in China is around 4800. Of course it varies depending on the unit but generally the new toys don’t need high calorific coal to be efficient, China runs it differently to Japan and Korea. No bonus clause will make up the price difference for the NCV 5500 ones. We ship the ncv5500 stuff and the lower grade Indonesian stuff. What we do is blend at the port anyway for the optimal cut based on that contract, add rocks if necessary.
Not economically viable to ship too low grade stuff anyway from the mines in shanxi and Inner Mongolia. Lower grade means either high ash so you are transporting rocks and getting smacked on calorific value, or shipping lignite which spontaneously combust so they are mined next to the plant anyway.
The author of that article either pulled crap from his arse as he wouldn’t know what the grades of all the inventory coal for blending at the ports are, or needs to be caught and shot as a spy for being able to obtain such a data on a national scale.

Chinese dairy giant Yili Group and its subsidiary Ausnutria topped the tally of the World Dairy Innovation Awards, which was held simultaneously with the 15th Global Dairy Congress in Laval, France, on June 14-16.

Altogether Yili bagged six awards, covering categories like packaging design, infant nutrition, intolerance-friendly dairy products, ice cream, cheese and dairy snacks.

Yun Zhanyou, assistant president of Yili group, said at the conference that "Integrating talent and intelligence resources, we have currently set up a total of 15 innovation centers scattered around the world and a 'global intelligence chain' has now been established."

With a large population and the further improvement of people's living standards, China is expected to become the largest potential market for diary consumption in the world.

It is estimated that the domestic dairy product output and sales volume will reach 30.45 million tons and 30.52 million tons, respectively, in 2022, according to a report released by Shenzhen-based research firm AskCI Consulting.

Yili told China Daily on Wednesday the company invested 601 million yuan ($89.49 million) into research and development in the past year, a year-on-year increase of 23.39 percent. By the end of 2021, the company ranked second among global dairy enterprises in the total number of patent and invention applications around the world.

Though repeated COVID resurgences rose raw material costs and blocked global supply chains, Yili still saw opportunities. The company said after the pandemic, consumers paid more attention to health and nutrition and were more willing to choose healthy foods like dairy products.

At the same time, the pandemic has also promoted the online economy. Yili said the dairy industry embraced new trends in consumption and achieved high growth in platforms such as e-commerce, online to offline business and unmanned retail.

In 2021, Yili Group's revenue reached 110.6 billion yuan, becoming the first Asian dairy company with a revenue of over 100 billion yuan.

As consumption upgrades and health awareness rises, the per capita consumption of dairy products has gradually increased, according to a report by market consultancy iiMedia. The data showed China's milk production has continued to grow since 2018. In 2021, the milk production reached 36.83 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 7.1 percent.

In the domestic market, the milk consumption of Chinese people has increased more than 40 times in more than four decades, but it still lags behind the global average, Yili said, insisting there is still room for improvement in consumption habits and milk consumption.

Internationally, Yili said it needs to carry out personalized innovation according to the needs of local consumers.

In June, four key projects of Yili's Future Intelligence and Healthy Valley will be put into operation in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, including a liquid milk production base, a milk powder production base, the Chilechuan Ecological Smart Farm, and the Yili Intelligent Manufacturing Experience Center.

East Asians historically were not big milk consumers. There is also plenty of BS claiming East Asians have natural lactose intolerance. But it is more of a lack of use to drinking milk causing digestion trouble than actual genetic intolerance. As for the advantages of drinking milk, just compare the height of the average North Korean with the average South Korean. People who drink milk on childhood typically grow to be taller as adults. One issue is that you get more hollow bones and as you get to old age, bone fractures are more common. If you stop consuming milk, or calcium, the bone cavities don't fill up and the bones become brittle.

Shanxi completed construction of the largest coalbed methane field of the country.

The production has reached daily capacity of 5.5 million cubit meters in gas extraction and delivery each, or more than 2 billion cubic meters per year. The annual production rate can be further increased to 3 billion cubic meters within the next three years. The total methane reserve is estimated at 600 billion cubit meters. So far this field has produced over 10 billion methane, equivalent to 8 million tonnes of crude oil.

Shanxi province has the most coalbed methane reserve in China. In the coalbeds buried 2000 meters or less underground, the province has an estimated reserve of 8.31 trillion cubic meters. That's about one third of the total reserve of the whole country.
