Chinese Economics Thread

China can keep all of its industries even if it is blockaded. Oil is only for transportation in China.

China also produces a lot of oil itself, as well as imports oild from Russia cross border.

There are some profound changes undergoing in China with regards to energy. This is about the New Energy or Clean Energy revolution. China now leads the world in solar, wind energy generation, ultra-high voltage electricity transmission, and new energy vehicle industries, an end-to-end supply and demand chain, both in technology and market. While the most direct and probably the biggest motivation are climate change and carbon-neutral by 2060 commit, they'll also have significant implications on emerging new strategic industries and energy security. A stone that kills three birds, so to speak.

Oops, I just learned about China's huge coal reserves.
Yup most of the electricity is from coal GS But China also has the largest coal to Gas/oil Liquefaction
China produce roughly 40% of oil consumption from domestic source, import from Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan make about 15-20%

4 Million Tons Coal-to-Liquid Project 神华宁煤400万吨煤制油基地

The world's biggest single coal-to-liquid (CTL) project went into production 2016-12-28 in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region: N38.173903, E106.608088
4 million Ton of oil=4 X7.333=29million barrel/12X30=80,000 barrel per day which is medium size refinery assuming 4 million is capacity per year
The world's biggest single coal-to-liquid (CTL) project went into production 2016-12-28 in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region: N38.173903, E106.608088 It is able to turn more than 20 million tonnes of coal to 4 million tonnes of oil products annually, including 2.7 million tonnes of diesel, 980,000 tonnes of naphtha petroleum and 340,000 tonnes of liquefied gas, according to Yao Min, deputy general manager of Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group. China planning to build 50 million tons coal-to-liquid equipment before 2020.

That's pretty good news for China's oil security, at least in a blockade China will be able to maintain some limited industries instead of being completely gutted like Japan
Yes it is a good news. But reality will soon sink in, that it is 8km deep down. That is very deep. Remember that it takes energy to pump up a very viscous liquid. I wonder what is the cost analysis per unit volume than just say buy in Iran. If it takes more energy to pump the oul out, than the energy gained after refining, then it makes no sense to pump it out.

This is just another demonstration that cheap oil discovery is over. Every new oil discovery will be hard to reach.

Technology in oil extraction has improved so much over the decades that even the most expensive oil field can produce oil at around $50-$60 a barrel. I would say since this field is still a conventional oil field even very deep one, it shouldn't cost more than $50-$60 a barrel.

Well oil is highly pressurized and very hot because of earth heat and gasses. They always come together. but seeing video seem it is light hydrocarbon or condensate which is very good quality oil. That is why you see gusher in film like The Giant. In offshore oil well the pressure can be as high as 4000 psi requiring 2 or 3 in pipe thickness. Offshore well is around 5000 meter. But you need to clean up the oil and get rid of water because water will freeze if it de pressurized and clogged up valve. Also all kind of mineral, sulfur need to be removed . Then gasses must be separated either process or put back into the well to assists with lift (offshore)

Depending on oil quality it can be costly or cheap . Oil is like a wine It has variety and grade. Saudi oil is lean and close to the ground It cost them $10 to extract a gallon of oil . Offshore around $30 to $40 Sand oil is the most expensive. Some people here comment that there is no ethnic connection between mainlander and overseas Chinese is hurting and blasphemy to the memory of those OC who give their life to China

It is amazing what China has achieved in oil and gas industry. Before the war China does not produce a single drop of oil .Everything must be imported and when Japan put embargo and seal China Oil must be transported from Russia thru Lanzhou and latter Burma road overseas Chinese driver from SEA transported those much need oil to support war effort.
