I suspect there's something else behind the screen. Could it be that there are many holes along the process of kidnapping Meng until now, that makes them having no case and facing big chance having to release Meng? And the bargain offered to Meng for her release is to admit some "wrongdoings" is just a trap.
Could it be after signing that, suddenly Canada will have "proof" to extradite her to US?
Ren should be mentally prepared ... Trump might drone strike her... no joke
Or something more low key like "suicide"... or a dozen other methods cough cough "unintended acceleration" of car...
Most likely they are trying to make a deal is because everyone involve with the case on the US side will prob be leaving or get replace when biden becomes president. The case is likely weak as is and Trump was hoping for deal if the hostage situation extended thru his 2nd term. Another angle is that Canada was holding Meng hostage as a gift to Trump, hoping for better relations. With the Trump administration over, Canada may also decide that there is no gain for continuing holding Meng.
This is what happened in Canada, just my 2 cents I cannot prove, but I am convinced this is what happened.
Apparently Meng Wanzhou was traveling through all sorts of countries that also have an extradition treaty with the United States, but all those countries flatly refused to arrest her.
Why did Canada arrest this Chinese woman? The Prime Minister Trudeau, listened or allowed the Attorney General at the time, an aboriginal woman, these two let the arrest happen. It appears to be incompetence or mild racism, that they can do this, believing they were going to avoid much fallout.

Whatever fault the US policy had, it's institution is functioning properly, it's one of its enduring strength and hope the American people protect it and appreciated it dearly.

If Meng were to mysteriously perish, so too will a lot of american and canadian politicians and spymasters. Pompeo might accidentally trip in the shower and cut his own head off in a shaving accident and Ivanka Trump might actually commit suicide with two bullet holes in the back of her head and tie herself up in a bag.
