This should be a lesson for Beijing too because they think if they're taking the high road, everyone will recognize it and China will be rewarded. Did Australia recognize China taking that high road? Australia took anti-China action to impress Trump at China's expense and only until China started hitting them back now they all of the sudden want to talk. Beijing's inactions, aka the high road, only told the Australians they can get away with it. Hit them immediately and then they'll think twice. China should turn the screws more and let them boil a while before thinking about talking to them.
Hi AssassinsMace,

I think China is just waiting for the right time to retaliate, she will strike when you least expected and when they do, it create a major impact psychologically.

With Chinese government’s recent commitment to carbon neutrality by 2060, coal power plants will start getting phased out in 2040 or so. It makes sense to reduce import and use our own coal before it becomes worthless.
Hi OppositeDay,

That's a justification , an excuse for the ban, the Australian assert that they export clean coal compare to Chinese one. Bugger coal is dirty period. But Coal will always be on the list of power mix along with nuclear, hydro and clean energy cause its cheap.

Coal is abundant in China, the CCP policy is to use trade as a foreign policy tool, to interact to understand each other. There is no sinister plan to take over Australia, whoever advise the Aussie gov't need his/her head examine and put in a firing squad for undermining Australia true national interest.

The day that the morison government goes down in flames is going to be good for the future but his entire leadership is banking k. The success of the USA. Gould they do next month, he will end up going sooner or later because he is making the same mistake as trump, putting politics in the way of doing business. For trying to screw with China economically and since this obviously has a lot of blowback on the companies that are making profits due to trade. This while turning China into the villain is currently and will continue to backfire until either they see reason or they go down in flames. I can’t wait to see how China deals with Scott Morrison. I hope it is painful

I think it is more to do with transportation Most Chinese coal mines are in the Shanxi and Inner mongolia And most of the user are in the south like Guangdong Guangxi So it make sense to buy from Australia as transportation cost is low But maybe China now built new line dedicated to coal transport. Or changing mix of energy using more LNG in the south I know they are building regassification plant in the south.

The south is also closer to the main hydropower dams, has nuclear power plants, and piped natural gas from Turkmenistan.
The reason from trying to phase out coal is quite simple. The government wants to improve air quality in the major cities.
I doubt coal will stop being used in industrial clusters far from the main cities.

With regards to LNG there are so many possible sources China can easily switch suppliers. Qatar and Nigeria are major exporters and Saudi Arabia and Iran don't even export that much LNG so vast untapped potential and close to the coast unlike US.
