Technically, China focuses only on one stealth aircraft programme, and that is the J-20. The so call J-31 doesn't actually have the "J" designation, so it is not an official programme but a private venture.

How good are China's private enterprise when it comes to making stealth fighters? I know it won't match up with the J-20 of course, but could it be done good enough for export?

Private venture of state corporation. It has nothing to do with private enterprise.

i've been checking ge imagery of big three manufacturers: cac, xac and sac over the last decade or so and i must say an interesting trend is visibile.

even though xac has produced just as many combat planes as the other two, there doesn't seem to have been any new buildings built anywhere near the complex. there's only just recently something new being built, just ground prep work so it could be anything...

sac has had some new large halls added over the last decade, but not that many. perhaps 30-40% more factory floor added.

cac has, by far, added most new halls. easely double what it had a decade ago. while ever increasing j10 production may've warranted that, there's also been ever dwindling j7 production. perhaps cac has decided to build as many in-house test facilities as possible?

Excerpt.

While we need to catch up to the 787 and A380 in material technology, the C919 has a competitive advantage over the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. Titanium alloy is 10% of the C919's structural weight, compared with 2.2% in the 737 and 4.5% in the A320. At present, the proportion of composites used in the C919 is higher than that for the 737 but a little lower than for the A320. The C919 also includes an aluminium-lithium alloy.

A few points:
- Latest J10 (presumably J10B) brings huge improvements against early versions of J10 (sky and earth difference, in his words).
- AVIC's UAV sells well in export market
- Engine technology still behind Russia, ahead in other areas
- US bombing Chinese embassy in 1999 spurred development of China's aviation industry. That was the lowest point of the industry, in his view.
- Goal is to be on par with US by 2021, meaning whatever US has, China also have it (though US may have it first). In certain areas this has already achieved (reaching same level same stage).

Nothing very specific or surprising, though still nice to see these words from the mouth of AVIC boss. I would say the 1999 bombing not just gave a shot in the arm to China's aviation industry, but to military industry overall, really a wake-up call.

Great to hear it from THE man himself.
Remember saying pretty much the same thing here with Chinese engines causing some serious hissy fit by not only western fanboys but Chinese ones with inferiority complex as well.
The funny thing is one can easily reach this conclusion with open info much discussed here, no need for inside info at all, just some common sense and objectivity.
