Too bad the CNC machine is Japanese. Domestic versions aren't good enough i guess

or another possibility that they already have had it for sometime. It is Japanese CNC and "only" 5 Axis CNC machine, so it is not super advanced

Chinese CNC machine technology moving up pretty quickly .. and once they achieve certain level, Japanese and Western (read Japan and Germany) rushing selling their CNC machines with comparable technologies .... otherwise they wouldn't sell it to China :p

Shenyang Aircraft Corp, a major maker of fighter jets in China, has been listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, a move observers said will help to finance the firm's export efforts.

The Liaoning province-based company, part of the State-owned aircraft giant Aviation Industry Corp of China, was launched Friday on the A-share market, which is traded in the renminbi, according to a statement sent to China Daily from AVIC on Monday.

Shenyang Aircraft is the first military aircraft maker to go public on the Chinese market, the statement said. Before the move, AVIC reorganized Shenyang Aircraft's assets and merged it with AVIC Heibao, a listed AVIC subsidiary in Shandong province that produces trucks, according to AVIC.

Shenyang Aircraft's listing will help AVIC explore the proper methods to optimize the conglomerate's capital structure and securitize its assets in the defense industry, the statement said. It also will enable Shenyang Aircraft to better upgrade its technological and manufacturing capacities, it said.

Wang Ya'nan, editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, said going public may allow Shenyang Aircraft to receive more investment from a wider variety of sources rather than the military and its parent company, enabling it to better finance its efforts to sell fighter jets overseas.

"Currently, almost all costs of AVIC subsidiaries pertaining to a military aircraft's research, development and production come from the military and AVIC. This means Shenyang Aircraft has to rely on its own profits, together with a limited amount of funds from the parent company, when it designs, makes and markets a fighter jet specifically developed for foreign users," Wang said. "This must have hindered the firm's endeavors to tap the international market."

By comparison, Western aviation giants can easily raise funds or introduce strategic investors from the equity market, meaning there are steady sources of investment to help them design new products and expand market share, he added. Wu Peixin, an aviation industry observer in Beijing, said the direct benefit the Shenyang company would expect from the listing will be more money that it can use in the FC-31 project, an ambitious effort to break the United States' monopoly in the advanced fighter jet market.

He said that funds raised from the stock market will allow Shenyang Aircraft to continue to sustain the costly program until it finds a buyer for the aircraft in the global market.

The FC-31 is a stealth fighter jet under testing at Shenyang Aircraft. The twin-engine, radar-evading plane made its maiden flight in October 2012, becoming the country's second 5th-generation fighter jet following the J-20, a more advanced type that has been commissioned for the Chinese Air Force.

AVIC displayed a model of the FC-31 at the 52nd International Paris Air Show in June and the 14th Dubai Airshow in November 2015, saying it wants to use the combat plane to capture a share of the military aircraft market of developed nations.

As the nation's leading aircraft maker, AVIC now owns 28 public companies with a total market value of more than 470 billion yuan ($73 billion), and those listed firms have raised 59.5 billion yuan from the Chinese stock markets since 2008, the company said.

The China-developed twin-engine regional jet ARJ21 has just received its first order from Africa, according to Chinese news site ThePaper.cn.

As the first customer of the aircraft in Africa, the Republic of Congo sent a delegation of seven officials to China at the invitation of Civil Aviation Administration of China, in a bid to promote bilateral cooperation of civil aviation between the two countries.

The group, led by Congo Republic’s Minister of Transport, Civil Aviation and the Merchant Marine Fidele Dimou, arrived at Chengdu, southwestern China’s Sichuan province, to experience the performance of ARJ21 on a test flight flown by Chengdu Airlines.

Dimou said to experience the flight is the best way to examine the reliability and comfort of the plane.

He noted to accelerate the aviation industry is a national will of the Congo Republic. And he believes in the quality of Chinese products, so the country did not hesitate at all before signing the deal.

“I hope Chengdu Airlines could carry out cooperation with their counterparts in Congo Republic, and help us to better operate the ARJ21 aircraft through its experiences and expertise,” Dimou said.

“We are the first African customer of ARJ21. But I’m sure that Chinese regional jets will receive more orders in the future,” Dimou remarked.

Am I wrong to think that maintaining a small fleet of ARJ 21 in Africa might be very difficult unless China manages to sell enough planes there so that it makes sense to establish a local maintenance center ?
Or are these planes sharing that many parts with western aircraft that they can be operated without problems ?

I would have thought that the first foreign countries to operate chinese passenger jets would be neighboring countries that could easily use chinese maintenance facilities.

COMAC has to learn to set up service centres outside of China if it wants to sell its planes all over the world. This is a good learning opportunity

They have to set up maintenance facility all over the world if they want to sell C919 So as vincent says it is a good learning opportunity
China did sell ARJ 21 to Thailand I think it is Bangkok airlines. so most definitely they will set up maintenance depot in Asia somewhere

My expectation was that they would sell first to chinese airlines and airlines in countries close enough to do all the big maintenance jobs in China and later move to countries farther away and establish maintenance operations all over the world.
Once they start selling the longer range C929 they will really need these facilities.

Selling to Thailand fits my expectations, but selling a very small number of planes to an African airline doesn't (unless they expect bigger orders from other African countries).

China did sell and still selling fighter jets in small numbers to many African countries, those jets need maintenance as well. I don't see a big difference or trouble of selling ARJ. The bottom line is you sell anything to anyone when you get a chance, and deal with the challenges later, one way or another. The chance will not wait for you to be ready, and may be gone for ever if you hesitate.
