Chinese 96-A

If the North Koreans entered, would they be allowed to shoot their MANPADs at the helicopter targets? :p

China won 2nd place at the Tank Biathlon finale, trailing the champion Russia by less than a minute. They destroyed 23/24 targets.

China will no longer use type 96B in future tank biathlon’s. We don’t know whether they’ll use the T-72 or other Chinese tanks.

Weibo account “北疆卫士号” said on August 23rd. This competition is no longer important.

I think there are two additional reasons:

1) China is done promoting the 96 series at Tank Biathlon.
2) Using T-72 gives PLA soldiers a good chance to familiarize with the equipment of potential adversaries.

The russians always place first in these tank biathlons. I was expecting china to place second since the beginning. IMO, If china will no longer use type 096B on the biathlons, and is done promoting it, thats because china is no longer interested in 96B.

As for china using t-72 in the biathlons to familiarize with it, that doesnt make sense. Much better to buy some and train on them. I find it hard to believe that china will use the t-72, for political reasons, even if the biathlon is no longer important. Perhabs they will use the type 15 ???

Doesn't China always win second in every single of these tank biathlons? I have heard repeatedly that the rules were rigged against the Chinese.

It's "rigged" against everyone except Russia because the course is in Russia and the Russians practice there everyday so they know it like the backs of their hands, every bump and crevice while foreign teams get very little if any familiarization with it before starting the comp. I think it would be much fairer to rotate the host country like every fair sporting competition.

This time they very obviously rigged the game. Russian crew missed 4 out of 12 tank targets and were only penalized once (one lap around the course). Even so China only "lost" by less than a minute. If China and Russia got the same treatment they would've won for certain. If you translate the comments from this link then you can see that even many Russian military fans believe China should've won.

I don't see why using T-72 is a big problem since China has already switched to Russian vehicles for the driving/IFV competitions this year. China proposed sending type-15s but got rejected hard by the Russians since it is not a "T-72 type" tank. The real reason is that the Type-15 pretty much negates the mobility advantage the Russian T-72 has over the Type 96. It might give too much of an advantage to the Chinese team.

It's rigged because judgement was bloody rigged.
Shame of a competition, "victory at any cost"

Doesn't look like their top leaders are happy with the results either.

Not to mention the fact that the Russian T-72's could hit 80 kph whereas the rest stuck around ~70-75. Something with a more powerful engine I guess...
