Allegedly the first Y-20U has been delivered to an operational unit of PLAAF. And even if my best guess as the PLAAF's first unit to gain this type would be the 13th Transport Division's 38th Air Regiment at Wuhan-Paozhuwan, which operates Il-76MD/TD
and the three Il-78 tanker, another option could be this one with the so far highest number "27" (?) or serial number 11257 assigned to the 4th Transport Division, 12th Air Regiment at Chengdu-Qionglai. The jump from the so far highest number seen "11155" and "11257" could be a hint for a new squadron.

If it's a dedicated tanker, it might be capable of carrying some 140+ tons of fuel. Though I imagine some 110 or so tons would be transferable.

Then again, there is also merit to not making it a dedicated refueling platform, even with less fuel carried.

And so again my question is: Which unit and which serial number does it have? ;) :p
That kind of question is borderline snooping we are just amateur observer and not interested in bases or unit designation.
But this induction of Y20 tanker is real milestone. for along time Chinese airforce is hampered by lack of tanker which reduce the range and persistence of their operation. So I am glad they fix this problem

That may be valid for you, but surely not for me and I wont rate it a sort of "borderline snooping" even if I am "just (an) amateur observer".

The Y-20U is the aerial tanker variant? Excuse my dumbness but I am still learning the basics as PLA watcher after 2,5 years.

I'm not sure where to ask this, but how can one tell the difference between a "base" variant of the Y-20 and the tanker version?
