Lu Kang, the spokesperson of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday that the détente on the Korean Peninsula should be cherished by all relevant parties and called on those involved to maintain composure and show goodwill.

"In order to continue and consolidate the easing momentum on the peninsula, relevant parties should maintain composure, show goodwill and avoid actions that would provoke each other," Lu said. "To jointly create favorable conditions and an atmosphere for solving the problem through dialogue and consultation."

The remark came after the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) suspended planned high-level talks with the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Wednesday, denounced the joint ROK-US military exercises, and threatened to scrap the forthcoming summit between its leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump if Washington unilaterally demands the DPRK give up its nuclear program.

China called on the DPRK and the United States to create good conditions for the meeting between their leaders and make active efforts to achieve denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

State media of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said early Wednesday that Pyongyang would suspend high-level talks with the Republic of Korea (ROK) indefinitely and threatened to withdraw from a scheduled meeting with the United States over an ongoing U.S.-ROK joint military exercise.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said the situation on the Korean Peninsula is moving toward dialogue and amelioration, and the hard-won situation accords with the common interests of all parties, as well as the expectations of the international community.

Facing important opportunities in a political settlement for the peninsula, relevant parties, especially the DPRK and the United States, should work together and show their goodwill and sincerity to create good conditions for the meeting between their leaders, he said.

China also hopes the DPRK and the ROK will follow the spirit of the Panmunjom Declaration, understand and respect each other's reasonable concerns to build trust and improve ties, Lu said.

Lu called on the parties concerned to avoid taking steps that would escalate the situation. He also called for creating favorable conditions for dialogue and consultations.

NK's deputy party chief.

So here is the line of event,
  1. Few days earlier Kim meet Xi in Dalian.
  2. Yesterday Kim cancelled meeting with ROK and threatened to cancel the summit with Trump in protest of the continuation of military drill in the south.
  3. Today Xi welcomed the deputy party chief of NK.
It seems
  1. Kim's movement yesterday was coordinated with Xi during their meeting.
  2. The two sides are fulfilling their pledge to boost regular and high level exchange.

This is a troubled world with bullies, arrogant & ignorant leaders with hawkish advisors (Trump Administration?). The Chinese Sage Chuang Tzu's wise words need pondering by those in power: "I do not know what is the benefit of a war in which you slaughter the soldiers and the people of the other country and occupy the land of the other country to satisfy your personal desire and spirit". The Trump & Kim anticipated meeting (now in jeopardy) should take place IF Common Sense Prevails. It will be for the good of the people of the Korean Peninsular, the region and the World at large. "Jaw jaw Not War war".

Concerned parties on Korean Peninsula should move towards each other: Chinese FM

All concerned parties on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue should move towards each other, not in the opposite direction, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said here Wednesday.

Wang told reporters that to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, an issue with deep and complex historical roots, the situation of one party showing flexibility and the other tending to take a tougher stance must be avoided.

"There have been lessons from the past and we do not wish to see the scenario repeat," said Wang, who is on an official tour to France, Spain, Portugal and Argentina.

Wang stressed that the current detente on the Korean Peninsula has not come easily, and the initiative taken by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) should be fully acknowledged.

"All the other related parties, especially the United States, should cherish the opportunity for peace that we are witnessing. We shall all be a promoter of peace, not a discourager," Wang added.

BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The recent efforts made by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) should be encouraged, welcomed and supported by the international community, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Thursday.

Lu Kang told a daily news briefing that the DPRK had made a series of efforts, including announcing a halt of nuclear tests and the dismantling of its northern nuclear test ground.

The efforts reflect the DPRK's willingness to promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and build mutual trust with relevant parties, as well as its sincerity to promote a political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue, he said.

"The DPRK's efforts should be hailed and deserve the encouragement, welcome and support of the international community," Lu said, calling on parties to meet each other halfway.

Media reported U.S. Republican senator Rand Paul said the DPRK had made concessions, as the country recently released three U.S. detainees and announced it would stop nuclear tests, but the DPRK had not "seen a little bit on the other side" from the United States, adding that he believed the talks between the two countries would still occur.

In response, Lu said he hoped this attitude of mutual understanding and empathy would receive attention.

With the joint efforts of all parties, an important step in the right direction has been made in settling the Korean Peninsula issue, Lu said.

He said the current momentum for dialogue and easing of tension on the Korean Peninsula, which has not come easily, should be cherished by all.

China has always advocated that all relevant parties should promote a political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation, and fully consider the concerns of all, including the DPRK's legitimate security concerns, he said.

"We hope the United States and the DPRK will seize the current opportunities, continue to build mutual trust, and make joint efforts to realize denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and lasting peace and stability in the region," Lu said.

Trump has blinked. Kim is a strategic "Chess Player". As a lecturer/trainer (still active) in Cross-Cultural Negotiation Skills & Int'l Biz, I reiterate that We East Asians are way ahead when negotiating with others. I observed the moves made by N Korean leader, and they signify an experienced "Chess Player". "Noises" came from the other party. Confucius, Sun Tzu and a few Chinese sages are excellent teachers. As the game plans unfold, we will observe whether "Win Win" results can be achieved by the Kim & Trump. Btw, in negotiations "Win Win" does not necessarily mean 50/50 ... it could be 40/60 for some areas etc. BUT they must seen as achieving mutually beneficial results by both US and N Korea. In the business & politics, the Chess Games" are continous. Happiness & Satisfaction could also be short lived. For the sake of the people on both sides of the divide, there should be interim satisfactory agreements.... hopefully long term solutions will come about, aimed at Peace & Prosperity of the respective countries & people; and Our Region.

Trump: No Libya model for DPRK's denuclearization

US President Donald Trump tried to put his summit with Kim Jong Un back on track Thursday, offering the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) guarantees of staying in power if he abandons nuclear weapons.

As prospects for a historic summit next month between the two leaders dimmed, Trump told reporters that if the meeting were to go ahead successfully, Kim "will get protections that will be very strong."

"He'd be in his country and running his country. His country would be very rich," Trump added.

But the pledge came barbed with a warning that if diplomacy fails, Kim could suffer the same fate as Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, who was overthrown and killed by rebels.

Trump's comments came as Pyongyang appeared to cool to the idea of the sit-down in Singapore on June 12, denouncing US demands for "unilateral nuclear abandonment."

Libya model

After the months of photo-ops and diplomatic backslapping, a DPRK official was quoted as saying the summit may not go ahead. The official also groused about Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton, who referred to Libya as a model for denuclearization.

In 2003, Kadhafi agreed to the elimination of his country's nuclear program and chemical weapons arsenal to gain sanctions relief.

But Trump, and Pyongyang, appeared to zero in on what happened a decade later during the Libyan revolution, when NATO-backed rebels ousted the government and killed Kadhafi.

"The Libyan model isn't a model that we have (in mind) at all when we're thinking of North Korea," Trump said while sitting at arm's length from Bolton in the Oval Office.

"If you look at that model with Kadhafi, that was a total decimation. We went in there to beat him," Trump said.

"Now, that model would take place if we don't make a deal, most likely," he warned Pyongyang. "But if we make a deal, I think Kim Jong Un is going to be very, very happy."

Although the Kim-Trump summit remains up in the air, preparations are continuing.

"North Korea is actually talking to us about times and everything else as though nothing happened," said Trump. "We are continuing to negotiate in terms of location... where to meet, how to meet, rooms, everything else and negotiating like nothing happened."

China underscores DPRK's 'legitimate security concerns'

China has urged the US to cherish the rare opportunity for peace on the Korean Peninsula and called on all concerned parties to move toward each other.

"To resolve the Korean Peninsula issue in a political way calls for the concerted efforts of all relevant parties,"

said at a regular press briefing on Thursday. "China always maintains that this political process shall be advanced through dialogues, and all parties' concerns shall be addressed in a balanced way, including the legitimate security concerns of the DPRK."

The US and the DPRK should "remain committed to building mutual trust and engaging in dialogues," he stressed.

Beijing refutes the 'China influence' allegation on DPRK

Beijing stands for stability and peace on the Korean Peninsula and for settlement of the issue through talks, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday, dismissing allegations that Beijing is influencing Pyongyang after it threatened to drop a scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump.

China always firmly supports the denuclearization of the peninsula and the political settlement of the issue, the spokesman Lu Kang told reporters in a regular briefing.

Beijing will continue to support the building of trust between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Lu said, calling on all parties concerned to take on responsibilities on resolving the tension.

In remarks in the White House's Oval Office on Thursday, Trump told reporters that the DPRK was possibly being influenced by Beijing – referring to the

, after Pyongyang threatened to pull out from the summit between leader's Kim Jong Un and the US president and called off a round of talks with Seoul, citing joint United State-Republic of Korea (ROK) military exercises.

The drastic change in tone came after months of easing tension and just days after the DPRK announced it will publicly shut down its nuclear test site and a week after releasing three detained Americans.

"If you remember two weeks ago, all of a sudden out of nowhere Kim Jong Un went to China to say hello again –

– to President Xi,” Trump said when meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

"It could very well be that he’s influencing Kim Jong Un. We’ll see what happens. Meaning the President of China, President Xi, could be influencing,” Trump said.

But the US president said the US was not pursuing

in getting the DPRK to abandon its nuclear weapons program. US National Security Adviser John Bolton has repeatedly suggested the Libya model of unilateral disarmament for the DPRK, most recently on Sunday.

The DPRK's First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan called Bolton's suggestion “absurd”.

“(The) world knows too well that our country is neither Libya nor Iraq which have met miserable fates,” he said.

Trump said the deal he was looking at would give Kim Jong Un "very strong" protection.

"He would be there, he would be running his country, his country would be very rich,” Trump said.

"The Libya model was a much different model. We decimated that country,” he said, adding that it would only come into play “most likely” if a deal could not be reached with the DPRK.

But Trump stressed that Pyongyang would have to abandon its nuclear weapons.

Lu said China welcomes President Trump's remarks that try to address Pyongyang's concerns.

The peninsula issue is a security issue, and it is important to address the DPRK's security concerns when parties try to push on the denuclearization of the region, Lu stressed.
