The net is usually used to conceal stealthy activities that might interest other armies or security teams. It also makes it harder to identify what surface-to-air missile system it is. But ISI analysts think it’s similar to the HQ-9 system that was deployed back in

. The HQ-9 air defense system, has a range of 125 miles, which would pose threat to any airplanes, civilians or military, flying close by.

ISI analysts believe that this provides further evidence that China is increasingly "militarizing" its islands in the South China Sea, ramping up tensions in the region that might undermine its strategic stability.

Another image shows five suspicious cars, four of them under camouflage net, right next to the tarmac in the southern part of the island.

, two days before these photos were taken, Chinese state media for the first time released a video showing a long-range nuclear-capable bomber landing on an island in the South China Sea, a move the Pentagon said raises tensions in the region years after China’s president pledged not to militarize the disputed area.

, said the bomber landed on Woody Island.

"The United States remains committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific. We have seen these same reports and China's continued militarization of disputed features in the South China Sea only serves to raise tensions and destabilize the region,” said Marine Lt. Col. Christopher Logan, a Pentagon spokesman.

Woody Island is the largest of the Paracel Islands in South China Sea, and is also claimed by Taiwan and by Vietnam.

I'm a half-day flight away from the SCS, but I can't imagine WHAT IF now Sweden/Germany/Russia started to reclaim the Baltic Sea

(just in case: in not that distant past, either of those countries possessed almost all of the enclosed land around that sea, so they might present 'historic claims' to all of it, I guess; by the way also Denmark/Poland had been very strong in the area, earlier than the three mentioned, but still)

and put on military assets like large airports, big radars etc. ... I said WHAT IF because all these countries except Russia are in EU ...

I know the SCS is like ten times bigger than the Baltic Sea, it's not just China reclaiming (for example

), anyway I don't understand why the US didn't challenge China

I hope you won't take it as warmongering or something, I've read about Wars (just some of them, of course) in the Baltic Sea area since around 1000 until 1945, but this is not what I mean, I mean many countries might draw their 'X-dash' line and began reclaiming huh?

Simple reasons why the US did not challenged China beforehand? It was too busy, too distracted and too overstretched due to the ME wars. Not to mention a vast underestimation of what the Chinese can pull off.
Personally, disinviting China for supposedly "bad behaviors" in the SCS is disingenuous as it neglects the actions of other participants like Vietnam (who reclaimed more places at once and did it first) or the Philippines (who rammed a boat onto a reef just to make a point, and have actually shot and killed fishermen in supposedly international waters). There is no angels in this muckpool.
This sort of knee jerk reaction is the last thing we need in this tangled web comb that is the SCS atm, what it needs is an clear view from an unbiased position. Something which is in short supply across the world.

"... Our focus on developing a more results-oriented agenda has been instrumental in efforts to address disputes in the South China Sea. ..."

I add an emoticon of sarcasm (LOL I feel too old to use Emojis)

This is not a knee jerk reaction by the US but a calculated downgrade of relations with China raising the stakes for China in disputing US "freedom of navigation"/military activities close to Chinese shores, setting up for even worse relations in the future by reducing opportunities for neutral/friendly official personnel interaction, as part of US containment of China and US intervention in the SCS disputes.

For the same reason why US annex Hawaii and Britain annex Falkland and that is security consideration Nobody ring Sweden or Danemark with military bases and post WWII no one try to destabilize, roll back or retard Nordic country .They were protected by NATO

That is not the case with China She has to ensure her territorial integrity by extending the defense perimeter as far as possible since SCS is the soft underbelly of important industial base of Pearl river delta and Yangtze delta
Historically China was invaded by the western power from this area

Beside SCS is the only exit of Chinese nuclear submarine to the west pacific She has to protect those submarine and the only way is to have persistent patrol by ship and aircraft from bases in SCS

Historilcaly China has iron clad claim onthose area as they are mention in San Fancisco treaty that has to be returned to China It predated the UNCLOS and It was occupied by then Kuomintang navy

Anyway China won't trade her security with participation in Rimpac that is absurd

China scolds U.S. for withdrawing invite to naval drills

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's Defence Ministry expressed regret on Thursday after the United States withdrew an invitation to China to attend a major U.S.-hosted naval drill, saying that closing the door does not promote mutual trust and cooperation.

The Rim of the Pacific exercise, known as RIMPAC and previously attended by China, is billed as the world's largest international maritime exercise and held every two years in Hawaii in June and July.

RIMPAC enabled the armed forces of the world's two largest economies to directly engage with each other. It was viewed by both countries as a way to ease tensions and reduce the risk of miscalculation should they meet under less friendly circumstances.

The Pentagon said the withdrawal of the invitation was in response to what it sees as Beijing's militarization of islands in the disputed South China Sea, a strategic waterway claimed in large part by Beijing.

In a brief statement, China's Defence Ministry said the United States had "ignored the facts and hyped up the so-called 'militarization' of the South China Sea", using it as an excuse to uninvite China.

"This decision by the United States is not constructive. Closing the door to communication at any time is not conducive toward promoting mutual trust and communication between the Chinese and U.S. militaries," it added.

China's island-building program in the South China Sea has sparked concern around the region and in Washington about Chinese intentions.

China says it has every right to build what it calls necessary defensive facilities on its own territory.

"IRRESPONSIBLE REMARKS"

Over the weekend China's air force landed bombers on islands in the sea as part of a training exercise, triggering concern from Vietnam and the Philippines.

The ministry reiterated that its building of defense facilities was to protect the country's sovereignty and legitimate rights, and had nothing to do with militarization.

"The United States has no right to make irresponsible remarks about this," it added.

"Being invited or not cannot change China's will to play a role in protecting peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and cannot shake China's firm determination to defend its sovereignty and security interests".

It is in both countries interests to develop healthy military ties, and China hopes the United States keeps the broader picture in mind, abandon its "zero sum" mentality and appropriately handle disputes, the ministry said.

Pentagon officials have long complained that China has not been candid enough about its rapid military build-up and using South China Sea islands to gather intelligence in the region.

In an editorial on its website, widely-read Chinese state-run tabloid the Global Times said there was no way China could trade in its interests in the South China Sea for access to the exercise.

"If the U.S. military increases its activities in the South China Sea, then our side will need to further strengthen its military deployments there," it wrote.

Chinese officials have accused Washington of viewing their country in suspicious, "Cold War" terms.

Speaking at a separate briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China has sovereign rights in the South China Sea and it is not realistic for the United States to use this kind of action to try to coerce Beijing.

The United States has dispatched warships to disputed areas of the South China Sea in a bid to challenge China's extensive sovereignty claims in the territory, which is subject to various claims by China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Brunei and Malaysia.
