‘Shift to higher gear’: Philippines’ Philippines president-elect Ferdinand Marcos talks up closer ties with China

Manila: Philippines president-elect Ferdinand Marcos jnr said his country’s ties with China will expand and “shift to a higher gear” when he takes power, signalling intent to advance outgoing leader Rodrigo Duterte’s pro-Beijing agenda.

Marcos, who won last week’s election by a landslide, said he held “very substantial” talks by phone on Wednesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who assured him of support for his “independent foreign policy”, and agreed to hold more comprehensive discussions.

The 64-year-old son and namesake of the notorious former dictator said Xi also acknowledged his late father’s role in opening diplomatic relations between China and former US colony the Philippines.
“The way forward is to expand our relationship not only diplomatic, not only trade, but also in culture, even in education, even in knowledge, even in health, to address whatever minor disagreements that we have right now,” Marcos said in a statement.

“I told him, we must not allow what conflicts or difficulties we have now between our two countries to become historically important.”

The Philippines and China have had a rocky relationship in recent years over Beijing’s vast territorial claims and conduct of its coast guard and fishing fleet in the South China Sea, through which at least $US3.4 trillion of annual trade passes.

Many analysts expect Marcos to seek stronger ties with Beijing, but say maintaining close relations with defence ally Washington will be essential in keeping the military and the public onside in a country with historically strong links to the United States.

Their phone conversation focused on bilateral ties and regional development, the Chinese embassy in Manila said in a separate statement.

Xi said both countries should carry forward their friendship, grasp the general trend and follow through the blueprint for bilateral friendly cooperation, the embassy added.

Marcos won the presidency with nearly 59 per cent of the votes last week. He will take office late in June. Immediately after his election, Marcos travelled to

that toppled his late father’s two-decade dictatorship.

Kurt Campbell, the White House coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, last week said the United States would seek early engagement with the Marcos administration, but said there were “historical considerations” that could pose challenges.

Marcos said Xi had expressed a desire to talking privately.

“We are both looking forward to having further dialogue,” Marcos said.
“He said both of us should talk, without the others.”

Very promising first start. Hopefully he continues and solves the SCS issue with China via bilateral negotiations. He certainly has the popularity to pull it off. Marcos is a godsend to China at a time when China is being demonised all over the world.

Watch the video where the presumptive President is seen mingling with his Filipino compatriots in the streets of Melbourne, in front of the building where him and his family are temporarily staying. On the video at around 49 seconds you can hear Bong Marcos exclaiming that he was delayed on meeting the crowd because he was on the phone with Pres. Xi of China.. He expressed this in Tagalog which is one of their official languages (English is the 2nd official language)

@sndef888 bro negotiation is our ONLY solution and China as a negotiating partner is more willing cause let's be honest, the current geopolitical adversity both parties want a favorable outcome. ASEAN as a whole want a peaceful neighborhood , just look at Ukraine nobody even SK and Japan want to be in that situation.
He certainly has the popularity to pull it off. Marcos is a godsend to China at a time when China is being demonised all over the world.
Bro the Ukraine War is a blessing for China, how much you twist the story, nobody believes the narrative of the Collective West and its MSM, the constant lying and the propaganda had reach its crescendo, anything coming from their mouthpieces is being fact check and its prestige damaged, and I'm glad our esteem member @SampanViking had open a new thread regarding the Ukraine War, we can see clearly what is actually happening , piercing the fog of war.

Aside from Ream news this week, I think something the Sri Lankan PM said is really interesting.

"My analysis is that China has shifted their strategic focus into South-east Asia," Mr Rajapaksa said in an interview at his official residence in Colombo.

"They see more strategic interest in Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia, that region, and Africa."
"They have less interest in this region," he added. "I don't know whether I am right or wrong, even the focus on Pakistan has gone down. That shows that their interest here is not like earlier. Their interest has shifted to two other areas."
I don't want to judge whether or not China is less committed to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but it seems to me that ASEAN countries around SCS are going to be more strategically important to China at this point. As China becomes less dependent on Middle East oil imports in the future due to higher EV ownership and Russia oil imports, it's not as important to ensure that they can keep the Middle East route going. China's trades with ASEAN region is more important than ever. It's only going to grow in the future.

@tphuang Sir excellent analysis, it's better to concentrate your resources rather than piecemeal, look at what happen to American aid to ASEAN, instead of helping it's an insult. There are opportunity beckoning elsewhere and you forget to mention Latin America, IF they were to succeed in fighting US hegemony, China need to step up BIG TIME as they bring the fight to American doorstep.

If I am not mistaken, I think the frequent change in Governments in Sri Lanka and Pakistan with inevitable resultant changes in policy in a see-saw fashion does drive China crazy.
might as well devote more energy and resources to more stable and friendly countries in SEA where the financial return to China is so much higher. also, the Chinese diaspora among these SEA countries would serve as trustworthy bridges and promoting platforms too.

You are spot on about Sri Lanka. But Pakistan's geographic location and proximity is too strategic for China to ignore.
