Pentagon proposal to use aircraft and Navy vessels in region prompts swift response: ‘We are severely concerned’

I don't believe that US will carry out that option. What if after doing the surveillance, China just increases the speed and size of the reclamation? Will US shoot the first shot? I strongly doubt it.

It is a gambit for US to do so. I think this is to test the water how the Chinese will react. Well, they reacted strongly. Hence, let's go to other option.

This is the main reason why I temporarily shelved my Neocon lifetime membership card- too many troublemakers like Zachary Keck gunning for a second Sino-American war, as if 35,000 dead Americans wasn't enough in the first one.

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter has directed his staff “to look at options that include flying Navy surveillance aircraft over the islands and sending U.S. naval ships to within 12 nautical miles of reefs that have been built up and claimed by the Chinese in an area known as the Spratly Islands.”

Both side might not want war, but incidents like this could easily blow up into something both side regretted later. I just hope no Rambo from both side pull something stupid to start a war that will hurt both countries and benefit no one but their own pride and those watching gleefully from the sideline.

Another option is for China to mine inside 12nm boundary, and announce this fact. If US want to violate this boundary and get their ships blown up, that's up to them.

China claims a big chunk of SCS, not just 12 miles off the islands. Putting mines in those areas seem to reduce Chinese claim.

You can do whatever you want to inside your territorial water, but not your EEZ. Mining is one of those things that is limited by international law.

Hopefully that is the case but I am afraid it is unlikely given the "containment" driven brinksmanship practiced by the US lately, from the Ukraine crisis to the Diaoyu/Senkakus security treaty coverage to the obvious propaganda push for India-China enmity.

I think trailing all US ships in the area is enough to keep this from accidental shots.

Assuming military ships from the US and/or other countries do start to frequently enter what China considers its territorial waters, I wonder if we will see 056's or any of the various older frigates doing the trailing. I also wonder if we will see accelerated building of 056's or perhaps even additional units of 054A or its successor design.
