Yes, it does look like an LPD. Most navies (I think) use converted merchant ships for the job. Granted, a lot of amphibious landing ships also use merchant-type hulls, but to actually use a landing ship design as a basis for a hospital ship is original; I don't think any other navies use any converted landing ships as hospital ships, but I could well be wrong.

i don't understand why the PLAN is building hospital ships like these. and there seems to be more than one of them too. the PLA is strictly a china bound military unlike the militaries of the UK, france and the US. there is no need to have a ship sent abroad to treat battlefield wounded troops because the PLA doesn't have foreign bases, it avoids joining in conflicts like iraq and afghanistan. why is there a need to build such a large medical ship?

Yes there is need for hospital ships, China is part of the UN and PLA have troops in several african countries where their is a hostile environment.

I suspect disaster relief is the main mission for these.

Actually having an LPD-based hospital ship (if that's really what this is) could be amazingly useful in natural disasters. Imagine "ambulance" hovercraft zipping in and out of the back of this thing.

The timing sort of makes sense too. Perhaps they made the decision to build this shortly after the Christmas 2004 Asian tsunami.

If the PLA and PLAM wants to to conduct an amphibious landing on Taiwan, then it will sustain heavy casualties. Morale of troops improves when they can expect specialised medical care instead of only 'morphine cure' administered by a corpsman under fire.

I agree. Another use could be a friendship deployment to give much needed medical aid to those countries that are lacking in medical faclities.

The US has doen this with it's hospital ships and intends to keep them in service for several more years rather than retire them this year as planned just a few years ago.

Of course they can be used for war purposes. Does any navy that has hospital ships have them for another purpose. Might as well spend time wondering why athiest China bothers to put a red cross on the ship. But in a war with Taiwan...? Why would China need a hospital ship for an island off the coast and don't forget it will be a prime target for the Taiwanese. What makes a ship at sea more protected than a hospital on land? Taiwan will try to destroy it at every chance in a war. So that can't be the reason why a hospital ship is being built.

Those of you pointing out humanitarian purposes probably more hit the nail on the head. Since it was the tsunami disaster that showed the Chinese government the lack of ability for China to carry out logistical and relief operations. All those countries laughing at China because it couldn't help as much in relief other than money... Be careful for what you wish for or in this case what you laugh about. Because now China will be able to carry out logstical operations for both humanitarian relief and military operations overseas. We all know how frightened those laughing are seeing China making all those successful diplomatic inroads with other governments in the past few years. What will they think when China starts sending these hospital ships to make routine port calls to developing nations around the world? They don't serve a purpose domestically and in war a hospital ship is easily vulnerable. So the primary mission for these ships will probably be humanitarian ports of call around the world.

I agree 100%. As I made a similar statements in one of the CV threads some time ago..

This hospital ship coupled with a helo carrier would be a viable asset to have during any sort of humanitarian effort.
