Testing of the steam turbine using non-nuclear steam has been completed at the demonstration high-temperature gas-cooled reactor plant (HTR-PM) at Shidaowan, in China's Shandong province. The twin-unit HTR-PM is scheduled to start operations later this year.
...
Construction of the demonstration HTR-PM plant - which features two small reactors that will drive a single 210 MWe turbine - began in December 2012. Helium gas will be used as the primary circuit coolant. China Huaneng is the lead organisation in the consortium to build the demonstration units (with a 47.5% stake), together with China National Nuclear Corporation subsidiary China Nuclear Engineering Corporation (CNEC) (32.5%) and Tsinghua University's Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (20%), which is the research and development leader. Chinergy, a joint venture of Tsinghua and CNEC, is the main contractor for the nuclear island.

Cold functional tests - which aim to verify the reactor's primary loop system and equipment as well as the strength and tightness of its auxiliary pipelines under pressure higher than the design pressure - were completed at the HTR-PM's two reactors on 19 October and 3 November last year, respectively. Cold functional tests at other types of reactors use water, while those at the HTR-PM used compressed air and a small amount of helium as the test medium.

Tests that simulate the temperatures and pressures which the reactor systems will be subjected to during normal operation started in January. Hot functional tests involve increasing the temperature of the reactor coolant system and carrying out comprehensive tests to ensure that coolant circuits and safety systems are operating as they should. Carried out before the loading of nuclear fuel, such testing simulates the thermal working conditions of the power plant and verifies that nuclear island and conventional equipment and systems meet design requirements.

A further 18 such HTR-PM units are proposed for the Shidaowan site. Beyond HTR-PM, China proposes a scaled-up version called HTR-PM600, which sees one large turbine rated at 650 MWe driven by some six HTR-PM reactor units. Feasibility studies on HTR-PM600 deployment are under way for Sanmen, Zhejiang province; Ruijin, Jiangxi province; Xiapu and Wan'an, in Fujian province; and Bai'an, Guangdong province.

At this time, external constraints are are to a large degree restricting China’s rise. This is not to mention the fact that the global economy, including China’s, are all under the system of the American dollar. While China has the world’s largest foreign exchange reserves that are up to over US$3 trillion, if you paid attention to the fact that as the pandemic broke out this year, America overissued $6 trillion, its not hard to understand where China and America are different. While China’s economy and the RMB have yet to escape the constraints of the American dollar, or while the global economy and global finance are still under the system of the U.S. dollar system, every one of China’s policy decisions has to consider this chief external constraint.
Thirdly, some people ask that if you say now is not the time, and doing the right thing at the wrong time is a mistake, then when is the right time? As I said earlier - the right time is when the wrestling match between China and America results in a clear winner. Some people don’t want to wait and say that what this means is that we have to wait indefinitely. I say, if we have to wait until some undetermined time in the future then so be it, but we are definitely not sitting around waiting, because if we sit around waiting that day will never come
From the very beginning just resolving the Taiwan problem was not difficult - what is difficult is tackling those constraints. If our train of thought can leap out from the confines of these ‘constraints,’ even though they still exist, we won’t be constrained by them, the situation will turn in our favour, the initiative will switch and will gradually come over to China’s side.

China has denied german frigate entry for visit.

I think this is incredibly petty and shortsighted by China. Germany is one of the rare few western partners that China has that aren't combative.

They're trying to visit a port to show that they aren't actually against China's interests and were likely instructed to do this by the US.

China should have welcomed them into Shanghai with a full 055 and Shandong fleet and turned it into a PR win-win

@sndef888 bro it need to grow a backbone, being nice but in cahoots is not a definition of friendship, that is the thing with the west their foreign policy of Moral virtue and wokeness is not being acknowledge by both China and Russia. For both countries International law must be of precedent.

Partners are important even if they are very feeble ones beholden to the US. Look at how Russia managed to sneak a huge gas pipeline to Germany despite being supposedly enemies. It is a sign that Germany does still act independently sometimes and can be of benefit

China is now extremely isolated after the US propaganda war during Covid. It needs any ally it can get and Germany is a very important one being the centerpiece of Europe

agree, i'm sure biden would be very happy if german/france start breaking up with China. EU, particularly france/german among few others dont want to counter china like US doing right now. worst case for china, not only have to deal with US/Aussie/japan/india/UK but add EU/canada to the mix. and dont forget SK either

What China should be doing is spinning AUKUS into an anglo-supremacist organisation and trying to combat it's rise with the fall of EU support

It is literally the best time for it. Trump made EU realise the fickleness of the US, UK left EU due to brexit, France just got slapped by the backstab of the submarine deal/Swiss F35 deal, Germany is showing goodwill, and Spain is not that interested in international politics.

These 4 countries are still big markets and high tech powerhouses that lead the western part of the eurasian continent. They would likely be much more receptive to BRI deals and trade agreements at this time

it's a small snub but a necessary one. Germany made too much noise about Xinjiang and Tibet. They sponsored sanctions of Chinese officials. To allow them to visit a port would be an implicit approval of their actions. It has little impact beyond the symbolic. Germany was unlikely to have even expected the port visit to be accepted.
