China won Turkey's missile defense competition

Equation

Lieutenant General
Turkey as a strong NATO member has again failed to to protect it's own skies against intruders and ballistic missiles. NATO has protected Turkey three times with Anti-Air and ABM since 1991, and not once did the Turks give the acquisition of advanced SAM systems a high priority.
Now they decided to design and build their own long-range SAM, which will take a long time to come to fruition.

Unfortunately, this whimsical way of putting up a tender is characteristic for the Turks.

They cancelled this MBT tender and decided to build their own MBT which has yet been put into production

They cancelled this tender too and decided to build their own attack helicopter, which is currently under production with a dozen or so in service

Lets just hope that the indigenous SAM will be completed before Turkey is caught with it's pants down.

Interesting perspective ... ...
Could you please elaborate more -- what you have in mind ?

I believe since the US pulled their Patriot missile away from Turkey because the possible missile threat from Syria has been down graded. Therefore Turkey with it's vying to buy a missile defense from either the West, Russia, or China have learned how and what to look for when testing for their own missile defense system, although we have to wait and see how effective it is. But it did gave their program a good start.

Although the deal is canceled China's system has proven to be the technically the superior one as well as affordable from the beginning. Oh well there will always be other buyers no matter how much the naysayers, doubters, and haters has to say.

I am wondering whether there will be some sort of compensation, China and others had spent a lot of money to prepare tender documents and demo. If there isn't ... what would happen if Turkey lets say open a new tender for LR SAM in 5 years time, would anybody be interested?.

I believe it is a good thing that HQ-9 is not owned by Turkey .....

There was a rumor that the Chinese had completed testing of a new SAM. If so, this might have disinterested Turkey who probably didn't want a "second-line" system.

I doubt it ... there will be always development and advancement of weapon system, it's a never ending game. Chinese HQ-9 met or exceed all the Turkish requirements, thats the main thing.

This decision more or less would damage Turkish reputation. For HQ-9, is a big winner.
Turkey may end up not having LR SAM for a very long time ... not before 2025

I begin to have another thought.
What is Turkey's capability of making its own SAM to the level of what West, Russia and China offerred? Does it need external assistance? Probably so, who will that be? Could this "domestic making" be a smoke-screen? We know Turkey has built its J-600T Yıldırım based on Chinese B-611. So it can be that the Turks buy SAM from China and relable it as indigenous.

Well since Turkey is a part of NATO, the west will probably offer assistance to Turkey if it does build its own domestic SAM.

Supposedly HQ-26. It was reported by Phoenix TV, but I could not find the original Chinese sources.
