What's the rationale for this
Among them, a relevant leader of the school revealed that Renmin University of China has indeed decided not to participate in the international rankings. Another insider said that China's knowledge system has been developed for thousands of years, and it is the oldest, richest and most profound knowledge system in the world. It innovatively develops Chinese cultural traditions, creates China's independent knowledge system, and maintains Chinese education.
Sovereignty and Cultural Sovereignty, "The withdrawal of universities such as Renmin University of China from the so-called 'international university rankings' reflects the autonomy and courage of Chinese universities, Chinese education, and Chinese culture".
Conversely, although everyone recognizes the rankings, it is worth pondering how fair they are and whether they really reflect the overall situation of the university or discipline. In addition, universities are not only more than academic research, but also guide the society with a sense of social responsibility, open up people's wisdom, and cultivate more talents.
This is the development path of "double first-class" universities or Chinese universities in the future. However, these may not be fully reflected in the current university ranking index system. Therefore, we cannot blindly believe in international university rankings. Chinese education also needs to conform to Chinese characteristics and reflect the connotation of Chinese universities.
In particular, the World University Ranking needs to find quantifiable common indicators and data-explicit indicators for each university, such as size, proportion of doctoral degrees in faculty, proportion of graduate students, proportion of international students, etc. , which makes it easy for everyone to focus on quantity and ignore quality, and focus on scale and ignore connotation.
In particular, the academic indicators of the World University Rankings may account for more than 50% or 60%. As a result, if schools want to improve their rankings, they must increase their scale and volume, make fuss about quantity, and make papers with "utility". The problems existing in the university and what is criticized by the society. Also, there is an overemphasis on leaderboards.

Honestly it reads like a bunch of excuses. There are several Chinese universities ranked in the top and if these Universities feel that they should be up there they should try harder.
