alright, got me confused. I thought it was 200 Su-27(kits), J-11A, J-11B, J11BG

huh? I thought the Russian kits are still called Su-27, and J-11 is when China start making their own. I think i need a Flanker crash course.

Maybe ... or you wait for what I have in preparation right now ;)

J-11A is Su-27 kit provided by Russia and assembled in China with Russian avionics. IIRC the original negotiation was for 200 Su-27 to be assembled in China with Russian provided kit (the so-called J-11A). However, PLAAF was not satisfied with the performance of J-11A (mainly the Russian avionics), so Shenyang developed J-11B, which is something like J-11A but with Chinese avionics.

The production of J-11A was cut short to ~100 units, and after that, they switch to producing J-11B. Reportedly the Russians were unhappy at that result (Cause using RU avionics = spare part dependencies = more Forex for Russia) and it caused all those rumors/reports about tension in further flanker procurement.

I'm not sure if the structural parts of J-11B are made in China or still using RU supplied kit, but it definitely uses Chinese avionics. J-11BG itself should be the MLU upgrade of J-11B. Not sure if there are any new build ones or PLAAF just buy more J-16.

J-11As are Russian provided Su-27SK kits assembled in China back in the 90s. SAC then (illegally) indigenized the J-11A in the early 2000s, upgrading it with domestically produced avionics, composite structural components, weapons, flight control systems, etc... calling it the J-11B. The J-11B has since seen gradual block upgrades with the introduction of the WS-10 engine. The latest J-11BG variant features an AESA radar, and it is recongnized by it's light-grey (as opposed to the normal black) radome.

While the J-15 and J-16 might bare resemblance to the Su-33 and the Su-30MKK respectively, they're really more SAC utilizing the J-11B as a framework to answer the PLA's need for a strike interdiction fighter as well as a carrier fighter. I'd like to think SAC were able to "look under the hood" from the MKK and Su-35s in the PLA's inventory as well as the T-10K prototype acquired from Ukraine to aid their development of the J-15 and J-16.

Wow :p:D what a great close-up image of a SAC J-11D in flight showing clearly the "new" canted radome for the "new" AESA radar.

The question now is, how recent this image is?

PS: I know, neither the radome nor the radar is NEW, this is most likely simply an old image only posted now, but at least to me that image is "new" ;)
