They were probably testing is J-8 still usable as interceptor against modern fighters . Ground control or AWACS vector J-8 so it could avoid being detected before it has opportunity to fire its missiles and run . Theoretically it could work, but then again, if modern fighters like J-11 detect J-8 as they close on them , J-8 would be in lot of trouble .

J-8 would then have to do what it does best. Turn around and be a rocket.

Agree, J-8 can still be used as a nice BVR platform by just carrying as many BVRAAM as possible, and forget about dog fight with anyone, just unloading all the BVRAAM at max range and run the other way. Not many fighter jet can catch her if J-8 choose to run away.. err.... I meant strategic retreat. :D

Before we all write the J8II off, remember how the Iraqis achieved their only air-air kill against coalition fighters.

The J8II is no Mig25, but it could work in a similar fashion with slash and dash tactics.

The J8II's high speed and high-ish service ceiling would also lend its missiles some kinetic advantages.

The Su27 is hands down the better all round fighter, but there would be instances and scenarios where the J8 enjoy some parity if not advantage itself.

I think these exercises would be primarily about giving frontline J8 pilots experience finding and exploiting those advantages to face down and defeat a superior enemy fighter.
