These are both free-fall / wind-tunnell-models of the S-37 and both are psed !

I think somewhere on my harddrive I have them in their original form.

But now back to the topic,

On another forum this photo showed up. Is it a naming error? This doesn't look like a J-11B to be. Or is it a J11 upgraded to J-11B level? Or has the PLAAF starting painting J-11B's to look like regular J-11's?

Definitely a J-11B. The old radar does not look like anything in this picture.

It maybe a J-11 upgraded to the J-11B level.

what's the difference between j-11b and j-11 anyways?just superior electronics?

In every aspect, superior electronics from cockpit to radar to fire control systems, and also includes digital FBW.

There are also things to reduce its weight and increased composite use all around the body.

I think the PLAAF pulled the plug on the flanker. J-11B simply wasn't what PLAAF needed anymore.

Instead, most likely PLAAF is developing something indigenous that would replace both the current flankers and the JH-7As. Perhaps a non-stealthy variant of the J-XX.

It just doesn't make any more sense for PLAAF to be still be building more flankers for the next few years when much better should be available a bit later (2013 or so).

Just because the J-XX might be ready for production by 2020 does not mean China will have enough of them all at once for its defense requirements. The Flanker is an important stop gap until they can transition to adequate numbers.

Very true. Even in 2030, in most optimistic scenario, there probably wont be more than 500 JXX planes in service. Which means that even in 2025 there will be at least a hundred Flankers left in service.

Realistically, of course, I dont think there will be over 250 JXX by 2030, and Flankers will probably serve a bit longer in bigger numbers.

China has way too much money invested in flankers to abandon it now. It's the first time they've ever had a heavy fighter that can do multi-role missions across long range. Despite all of the beatings su-27/30s had against J-10, there is still a lot of supporters in PLAAF for J-11B and following variants. When I say supporters, I mean these people are more in favour of J-11B than J-10.
