Re: Shenyang J-31 Fighter

I don't compltely understand but I appreciate the effort in explaining it :)

Sorry :( ... that's proof for the fact that all publishers working with me are all running all my texts thru an editor, who translates my school-English into a real-world English !

Hope this explains better ....

Forget it, Xiabonan, WS-10x is a lost cause.
Lost cause? Or painful 1st lesson in developing & mass-producing a high-perf TF? Only other mass-produced TF for PLAAF/PLAN is the Xian WS-9 Qinling (marginally improved RB.168 Mk.202). But the follow-up Xian Qinling-2 seems to be missing in action. So, I wouldn't call WS-10x a lost cause (yet) especially since Russia won't supply engines for J-11B variants and WS-10 is the sole source for J-11B/BS/BH/BSH, J-16 etc... Only J-15 has AL-31 that too is probably cannibalized from older Su-27SK.

Re: Shenyang J-31 Fighter

Can you explain why?

There are lots of reports on WS-10x problems, and Jane's Defense article is one of many such reports over the years. Chinese sources has at times described jet engine development problems, so it's not simply Western bias on Chinese technological advancements. Something isn't right with the Chinese jet engine industry.

Problems with China's indigenous jet engine programmes are putting the People's Liberation Army (PLA) at odds with the country's defence procurement bodies.

The most visible issue is problems with the WS-10A jet engine made by Shenyang-based Liming Aeroengine Manufacturing Corporation. This powerplant is supposed to be a close analogue of the Russian-made Lyulka AL-31F, and the Gas Turbine Establishment (GTE) engine division of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) has had plans for years to replace the Russian engine on all of the aircraft currently powered by it with the WS-10A.

The AL-31F jet engine has been bought by China in different variants: some were standard production models purchased to power the Russian-designed Sukhoi Su-27SKs that were assembled under licence at the Shenyang Aircraft Works (SAC) in Liaoning Province; others were bought for shipment to SAC's major rival in China's fighter aircraft sector, Chengdu Aerospace Corporation (CAC), in the capital of Sichuan Province.

OK Hyperwarp, it's possible WS-10x isn't a lost cause, yet. But, what will you say three or four years from now when J-10, J-11, J-15, and J-16s are still mainly sporting Russian/foreign engines? Would it be a lost cause then?

Expensive ≠ lost

It's very simple, Blackstone; WS-10s are expensive to produce and they are only procured at quantities sufficient to sustain an indigenous turbofan industry. China has the option to ramp up production at any time but since she's not going to war anytime soon, it doesn't make any economical sense to do so.

Similarly, ZTZ-99s are procured at vastly lower quantities than the ZTZ-96s because they're more expensive, not because they're a 'lost cause'.
