The Trident II may be multiple decades old, but it is still in service. A variant of it is supposed to stay in service until 2042. The current Chinese JL-2 range and accuracy-wise has probably around the same capability as the Trident I.

In any case, the Trident II's fearsomeness is not because it can hit Asia from the Gulf of Mexico, it's because US subs are deployed all over the world. In that case the range is not so important. If China's subs are confined to the Bohai Sea or the SCS that's their main disadvantage.
But are they confined to Bohai Sea or SCS?
Do you have any reports about deployments, numbers etc?

This article claims the Type 094A submarines have more missile tubes and carry a longer ranged JL-2A missile.
This would be in line with what we know about the JL-2 being similar to the DF-31 missile and the increased range of the DF-31A.
I would say such reports are simply misinformed and wrong. There's plenty of satellite coverage of the 094 submarines at Huludao throughout 2019. Those are most likely the two ones that've joined the force by now.

They're very clearly of same length and with same number of missile silos. Also suggesting missile silo dimensions have not been changed either.

On the other hand, the idea of a modified JL-2 is a perfectly sound one, and such a missile is more likely to be used eventually (if it hasn't been put into service already) than not.

But what missiles have replaced df21c? Df16 is too short ranged. Df26 seems like an overkill, double the range. I guess only df17 might fit, but has it really been produced in sufficient numbers yet?

Or have the units migrated from ballistic missiles to cruise kind? Perhaps to df100?

If I were to guess, DF-21C's replacement is DF-17. So 3rd generation tactical ballistic missile replaced by 4th generation.

Replaced by DF-31AG in the 621th brigade. First DF-100 unit seems to be the 656th Brigade
