Can someone explain why the EU is so bipolar on China?

OK, "authoritanian shift" is usually a dog-whistle for another real reason

Guys I think I found the real reason...

Lmao does the EU think that China will have its tech foundations based on the EU tech lol. Did they miss the whole US sanctions thing where China was backstabbed by the US. Why does the EU think that China will allow this to happen again? Delusional

And does the EU think that China will abandon its farmers for the EU's farmers? I am sure they can strike a deal to accommodate both interests as China is a huge country and it needs a lot of different food. But China wont let the EU control its agricultural market. Plus better to get some food from Russia than to abandon it for the EU. Russia must be tied at China's camp at all costs so if that means less EU agricultural sales to China, then so be it.

Steel mills employ millions(?) of people. There is no way that China will suddenly close them down and have these people become poor. China has already taken some small steps and it is gradually closing down some of these old, inefficient and pulluting mills. This will happen but it will take some time

Yeah sure. No way buddy. China can stop the subsidies if the EU starts technology transfers so that China wont need to reinvent the wheel because it is blocked from acquiring external advanced IP. Until that happens China will shower its industries with money until they become advanced and then start taking over the world. Maybe the EU wants to have a competition to see who has more money for subsidies, EU or China?...

What interests does the EU have on the other side of the planet in the South China Sea? I am sure the EU is taken very seriously on the region...

The EU should go and take a hike. If the US cannot dictate to China how it handles the Taiwan issue, what qualification does the EU have to warn China?

If the world's superpower is running scared in Taiwan, how will the dysfunctional, 0 navy, bureaucratic EU wanna-be-superpower deter China from taking action on Taiwan?

They should better sit down, solve their migrant problem, relations with Turkey, Russia, and stop being a US puppet, before they try to sit at the big boys table
The source is very anti-China though.

@Andy1974 most western source are anti China, the only one I found unbiased is Asiatime and maybe RT.
Asia Times is excellent, one of the best sources. Politico EU is basically the US Foreign Arm, however they have their own way of doing propaganda.

This time I find their reporting on this specific matter credible. However keep in mind that in the article it always said EU, not Germany, France, Italy etc specifically.

These publications have their own "style" for doing propaganda, after you have read 100s of their articles you will start spotting it naturally

The headline is a bit misleading though. They're increasing the water supply to Kinmen, which is under Taiwan control (at least for now). Kinmen has been dependent on the Mainland for their water supply for quite a while now.

Kinmen is also very pro-Beijing and anti-Taipei, and the DPP in particular treats Kinmen as their red-headed stepchild. I imagine that if armed reunification happens, the people of Kinmen would be on the streets welcoming the PLA.

@solarz Sir! the Chinese sure know how to spin a story they learned a bit from the US...LOL. At least Sir the Taiwanese can look forward to a future where a tunnel either by Train or water supply is feasible. And with the development in the Mainland, they can benefit. The Taiwanese together with HK are constrain by their size, they had already peak and the obvious choice is join the Mainland to maintain growth, they know it but pride is the barrier , having discriminate the Mainlanders for so long and had become a routine the guilt is really hard to swallow.

@voyager1 , I've been reading the last few pages and you have been off the rails.

1. No matter how large and intimidating China's military is, (and it is by far large and powerful enough for Australia,) it will never be used to enforce commercial contracts. If Australia breaks its contracts with China, then China can break its contracts with Australia. There is no martial answer no matter what kind of military you have. Your suggestion is incoherent and fails to link the two and that's because there is no link. Until China's military is stronger than America's by far, causing Australia to side with China out of fear for its future (against its own racial instincts even), it is useless, and China doesn't have the wealth or technology to have completed such a military yet... it is working on it, and starting to build equipment that is the best in the world, but it could not have completed this project yet.

2. When asked how large you think China's military should be, you said it's not your job to know. Then it's your job to shut up. If you haven't done the calculations and you don't know the inner workings of the PLA, then just keep quiet. Who are you criticizing? The CCP for building its military as a challenger to America's in world record breaking time? More is not a valid suggestion because once can always ask for more. It's not your job to know but it's their job to know and they do, so your criticism is null and void.

Supplementary point: Chinese military technology also develops fastest in the world; the more you spend buying equipment today, the more outdated equipment and less funds for next generation equipment you have for tomorrow. So it is far far more complicated than just adding as many ships/planes/missiles as you can afford every year.

3. As for Australian iron ore, China may be spending some time to create new supply lines but Australia won't have another customer like China no matter how long they wait. China has Australia in a panic because China's running down the clock on them. Australia doesn't have anything over China; it cannot even ban those sales to China to deal a blow because it needs the money. The political situation is unpredictable because Australia and the US are democracies, changing personality every few years. Those deals to open and exploit those ore mines were done long before anyone had a clue that Trump would screw the whole world up. If Trump hadn't happened, none of this would be an issue now. So essentially, your complaints sum up to criticizing someone for not seeing yesterday the poker cards laid on the table today that you see now.

4. Taiwan didn't pull any crap about changing its name 10, 20, 30 years ago when China was much weaker. It's pulling this crap now when China is the strongest it has ever been, so it's clearly not due to any perceived Chinese weakness. Rather it's China's growing strength that is causing its antagonists to writhe and struggle. It's bound to happen, no matter when this rise occurs. But that the ROC does not dare declare independence, and that the US does not dare declare that it will militarily confront China over Taiwan (rather, it hides behind "strategic ambiguity") shows that Chinese military power commands respect, even if that respect is stained with the hatred of China's enemies helplessly watching as China grows outgrows every other country in the world.

I think the most important thing of what Trump has taught China is the unpredictability in democratic societies. That's why China can't always depend on other countries from behaving rationally. We have witnessed that China has adjusted some of its plans to accommodate this change of landscape. However, too many elites in China still harbored the illusion that its rivals would behave rationally and pragmatically.

That's why I don't agree with the argument that China can't be wronged or Chinese elites can't make mistakes. They have made a ton of mistakes especially in the 80s and 90s. It is still healthy to criticize and examine policies of Chinese government to see if it is going the wrong direction.

As for Taiwan, I would again argue people still think Taiwan would always behave rationally. That Taiwan wouldn't dare to declare independent. Let not forget what happened in HK. Did those oppositions in HK behave rationally. The answer is clearly no. What makes you think Taiwanese politicians and people would be any different.

Did you just say Asia Times is excellent??? Lol

It's run by a American expat out of HK. Most of their articles are full BS or partial BS repeating CIA lines. Only people worth reading on there are the old contributors from over a decade ago, pepe Escobar and mk bhadrakumar. But those two u can read on the Saker and MJ's on website.
