Fire and floods....LOL.

One of the Navy’s ageing Collins class submarines flooded twice in the weeks leading up to an electrical fire on board that has taken it out of action for months.

In response to Labor questions on notice asked at Senate estimates, the Defence Department revealed HMAS Waller will return to service in September after undergoing extensive repairs

Collins class submarine HMAS Waller, which has been hit by fire and floods in recent months.

Defence said the the fire was caused by a flash-over of an electrical motor in what it described as an auxiliary machinery space.
While the fire was extinguished, it reignited several hours later before finally being put out. The air compressor motor and damaged electrical cables needed to be replaced.

“The root cause of the electrical fault, leading to the flash-over, is still under investigation,” Defence said.

But the department also revealed there had been two floods on board HMAS Waller in March.
In the first incident on March 22, HMAS Waller was surfaced off the West Australian coast when water flowed into the submarine through the conning tower hatch.

“All procedures and safety systems operated correctly. However, this water ingress caused numerous electric failures that required the submarine to return to Fleet Base West for repairs,” Defence said.

“The water ingress was caused by the combination of a large sea and swell allowing a wave to enter down an open hatch. This happened during a surfaced training activity being conducted at night.”

‘Sketchy details’

Four days later, during a diving exercise, a seawater pump failed, resulting in some flooding of the bilge.
“All procedures and safety systems operated correctly and the submarine returned to the surface,” Defence said.
The department said procedural changes had been made to ensure training was conducted during appropriate weather conditions.
HMAS Waller last completed a major maintenance program, which happens after every decade in service, in July 2020.

Opposition defence spokesman Brendan O’Connor said the recent issues with the submarine raised questions over the plan to extend the lives of all six Collins class submarines to avoid a capability gap while the navy waits for the French-designed replacements to be built.

“It is troubling that there have been two floods and a fire on this submarine this year, with the cause of the fire still unknown, leaving it out of service since April,” Mr O’Connor said.

“The Collins class submarines need to last us at least until the Future Submarines commence delivery mid next decade to avoid a serious capability gap. Yet the government has released no formal details on their life-of-type extension, and has delayed the decision on the future location of their full-cycle docking by nearly two years.

“With nothing but sketchy details released on the life-of-type extension program for the Collins class submarines, and the $90 billion Future Submarine program in shambles, the government needs to get our submarines programs sorted and deliver the capability this nation needs.”

New reports of Australia scrapping it's french submarine plan and going with US/UK nuclear sub designs

A little bit surprising but the possibility was always there.

The US is consolidating it's control over it's colonies Australia and UK in a bid to contain China. Good thing is it will probably piss off the French though

So the costs will escalate, and the Australian SSN will be delivered much, much later compared to the Barracuda derivative.
@Skywatcher Sir when delivered its obsolete visa vie the type 9V? I'm not a submarine expert, but having a large numbers of conventional sub is better than a few expensive SSN which is maintenance heavy? Especially for a continent size country like Australia?

The anglo countries intend to band together to attack China.

In that regard, a nuke sub is more useful as it will be able to travel longer distances.

This move is extremely concerning, it is a clear sign of aggression from the anglos.

Its called the Long Con
America always intended to use Australia to enslave Asia, they just had to jump the gun since China developed too quickly...

@sndef888 bro copy but my question still remain can they afford it? maybe six for the next 15 years? with the first boat entering service in 2030? maybe at the early date 2028 if they purchase it directly from the US? bro its a given the 5eyes plus Japan is a bloc its concerning YES but by that time the Chinese will be producing type 9V in quantity combined with conventional Sub.
