^So it might be just a test/trials ship?
It would seem an odd choice of vessel to use to test a radar. The Yagi array is only just above (or at) bridge-top height.
I also see that the original mast and radar are still in place.
If it was a modification to test the radar, surly replacing the old mast and radar with a new one would be a better idea?

I want to see exactly what type of Type 517 array it has. 8 elements, 2 x 4 arrangement = Domestic version. 12 elements, 2 x 6 arrangement = Export version, like sold to Pakistan on F22P. The two 053H3 that were sold to Bangladesh had the export 517, the domestic one it had were refitted with this. The 054A/P appears to be using the Type 517 export version, which differs from domestic 054A which has none of this at all. Its been a while since the F22P were made, so the Type 517 export version should have its back end upgraded for the 054A/P and after that, the new version needs to be tested. Since we have seen LSTs being drafted for test ships, looking at the ship with the railgun, it won't surprise me if one can be used to test a new radar set.

Type 517 aka Knife Rest is never really set high, its always set on the back and always on its own mast. It is not intended and never replaced the old mast and the main radar of all the ships it is on, including the Luda and Jiangwei classes. This radar is even refitted into the Type 052 --- which never had the radar originally--- as part of the 052's modernization refit and it also sits on the back.

Also, I would have thought they would have fitted a taller mast to increase the radar horizon if this is meant to a radar picket ship.

As Tam said, the 'Knife Rest' does not need to be set high. It's a odd thing, when you consider the age of the ship and that the other two in the class have been retired. And yet ... there it is. I'm still looking for a better photo of it.

A tactics question:

How powerful is a large fleet of modern multi-role destroyers and frigates vs A supercarrier. Suppose, 10 type-55 and 20 Type-54 frigates are in formation keeping enough distance to cover a large area. Can they threaten a Nimitz Super carrier and its escorts?

I assume the air wing can be kept at bay with Air defense missile? Even with low flying they cannot really enter their area since all the ships are spread apart enough to cover the line of sight with Radar and can destroy the planes with a massive barrage of SAM missiles.

The ships can destroy the Super-carrier and its escorts with a saturation of anti-ship missiles.

The escort submarine can be destroyed with the large fleet of anti-sub helicopters on the decks of the ships and also they all have sonars and other sub detection sensors.

What do you think about this scenario?
