But he joined Google?? If he left for patriotic reasons, he might as well join a Chinese company.
We can’t judge him based on him wanting to remain in the US.Everybody have their own realities, so we don’t know why those Chinese researchers prefer to stay out for now. I’m sure there are advantages for them over there than being in China. Else they would have left . Everybody situation and conditions is different. So we can’t really make a judgement on that for now .

Anthropic’s ‘anti-China’ stance triggers exit of star AI researcher

Chinese researcher Yao Shunyu joins Google DeepMind after Anthropic labels China as an ‘adversarial nation’

A star Chinese artificial intelligence researcher has left Anthropic to join a rival company, citing the American AI start-up’s “anti-China statements” as a key reason for his departure.

Yao Shunyu, according to a post on his website on Monday, left Anthropic after less than a year to join Google DeepMind, partly because of his “strong” opposition to the start-up’s characterisation of China as an “adversarial nation” and its broader rhetoric.

Anthropic labelled China as so last month when it began barring subsidiaries of Chinese companies anywhere in the world from accessing its services.

“Although, to be clear, I believe most of the people at Anthropic disagree with such a [characterisation], I don’t think there is a way for me to stay,” Yao wrote.

I always wondered why Anthropic and Claude bothered me. Turns out they don't like us.

Is Google/Deepmind more neutral w regards to China?

Deepmind CEO has publicly advocated for the United States and China to cooperate on AI issues of mutual interest. So, more neutral than Anthropic.

That Deepmind CEO is also half-Chinese may help wrt to Deepmind corporate stance on non-white staff

I can't judge him based on the fact that I don't know what he was contributing or capable of doing but I stand 100% by my previous post: if he's a man with skills that China wants, he's obligated to return or he has shirked his duty to his nation and his bloodline. If he's not such a man but he's out-competed in China, if his skills are largely redundant in the Chinese market and his choice is between "star talent" in the US vs desk grunt/code monkey in China, or if he plans to build more experience with modest contributions to American companies before ultimately joining a Chinese company to truly blossom his skills, then I will not judge him (negatively).
