With many US states experiencing a shortage in baby formula, parents are resorting to interstate travel or going online to find supplies as their woes draw national attention.

The shortage began earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic when companies started to face supply chain issues, including locating the necessary ingredients, and labor shortages compounded the problems.

It was worsened by a recall in February at an Abbott Nutrition facility in Sturgis, Michigan, a major producer of baby formula. Three brands made there were recalled because of potential bacterial infections.

The amount of baby formula out of stock across the United States hit 40 percent on April 24, according to Datasembly, which provides access to billions of grocery and retail pricing records.

Tennessee, Texas, Missouri, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota have seen shortages higher than 50 percent, The New York Times reported. A total of 26 states have out-of-stock formula rates of 40-50 percent.

Retailers such as CVS, Target and Walgreens have limited purchases in stores and online to three per buyer, while parents have raised concerns that others are hoarding the formula.

A four-pack of formula was selling for $139.99 on the eBay platform on Monday.

The White House said on Monday that it is working with manufacturers and the Food and Drug Administration to get shelves restocked.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that "ensuring the availability of these products" is a "priority" for the FDA and that "they're working around the clock to address any possible shortage".

Many mothers have taken to social media to express their outrage.

"This has GOT to be addressed!!!! Raise the gas prices, inflate the food, but give our babies the food they NEED!!!! How the hell did this just become optional?" Kayla Zurenko wrote on Facebook. "I shouldn't have to search a tri-STATE area for baby formula-and STILL not find any!"

Wynter Balthrop of Gallatin, Tennessee, told Fox News that she broke down inside her car after driving to six stores and calling others as far as three hours away to find out that the only formula that her baby can tolerate was out of stock.

Abbott Labs recalled certain formulas after five infants contracted an infection that can cause severe blood infections and meningitis. Two babies reportedly died as a result. The company, however, denied that its plant was the cause of the fatal infections.
We are watching the great depression in slow motion. Baby formula is now a luxury. Lots of mothers will be going back to breastfeeding.

US drug overdoses break record

More than 107,600 Americans died from drug overdoses last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed on Wednesday. The record-setting figure, driven by fentanyl and other synthetic opioid abuse, represented a 15% increase over the previous year's 93,655 overdose deaths.

The massive number is the highest recorded since the CDC began keeping track of overdoses, representing a whopping one overdose every five minutes across the US. However, the rate of increase has slowed by half since the previous year. Overdose deaths surged 30% between 2019 and 2020. The largest increase was seen in Alaska, where drug-related deaths soared 75.3% over the previous year.

Synthetic opioid fentanyl, 50 times as potent as heroin, remained the primary culprit in the vast majority of overdoses, present in nearly two thirds (71,238) of the casualties - a 23% uptick from the previous year. Methamphetamine was a distant second, appearing in 32,856 cases, though at 34%, the rate of increase was steeper than that seen for fentanyl. Some 24,538 of the dead had taken cocaine, while just 13,503 had taken prescription pain medications, the drugs primarily responsible for kicking off the US opioid epidemic over two decades ago.

Last year was hardly the first to set a record regarding overdoses in the US, which have been steadily climbing for years aside from a brief dip in 2018. The figures have only grown as the easier-to-smuggle and -synthesize fentanyl has overtaken heroin in drug markets across America.

Heroin itself gradually replaced prescription opioids as the latter became more difficult to obtain following a nationwide crackdown on “pill mills.” These were doctors willing to write prescriptions for a beefed-up fee, scripts filled at well-stocked pharmacies that didn't ask too many questions about why they were in some cases dispensing enough pills to keep every resident of their communities medicated year-round.

The Covid-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the issues facing both sellers and buyers of dangerous drugs, making international travel more difficult - and the more compact, easy-to-ship synthetic opioids a more appealing commodity. At the same time, it has increased the psychological stressors that drive people to use drugs in the first place and made treatment more difficult to access.

Last year saw federal agents seize more than twice as much fentanyl at the US' southern border as they had during 2020, and almost four times as much as in 2019.

(Bloomberg) -- It’s been three years since US officials sounded the alarm: Citing national security threats, the White House, Congress and federal agencies began ordering that certain Chinese-made equipment had to be ripped out from telecommunications and security networks.

But delays, deferrals and a serious funding shortfall have left that threat largely unaddressed, and Chinese technology remains in place throughout America — including in some surprising places. More than 100 telecom providers are still connecting mobile phone calls for hundreds of thousands of customers with gear from Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. Chinese-made equipment is also still serving Department of Defense facilities, the corporate jets of some of the largest US companies and the biggest commercial airlines.
