A strike aircraft launched underwater from a submarine.... interesting, very interesting. Wonder what it might look like...

 Aren't those models from some Tv show. I can't remember the name. Didn't they use marionettes?.."Thunderbirds" or something???

This is the legendary 'SkyDiver' combined submarine and interceptor from the 1970 Gerry Anderson series 'UFO', the first one of his shows to use live actors instead of marionettes.:D

Never saw that one...Musta been in the UK. The first Gary Anderson show I remember was "Super Car"

I guess this is pretty off topic!:D :eek:ff :eek:ff

As regards Jeff's SSCVN / SSLPHN:
They probably won't operate as hidden as a "convetnional" sub since their task demands them to surface once in a while. But traveling submerged for some time makes it at least much more difficult to track them / pinpoint their location countinously. At best, they can escape enemy recconnaissance with the help of other SSNs and then significantly reduce an opponents reaction time, wich is already a big improvement of effectiveness.
However, the moment it brakes through the waves will be a really dangerous one. You probably won't have a clear picture of air activity there. That means you need AAW-SSNs that give cover on time.
Here come waterborne aircraft into play. You could use small waterborne UAVs for a first look out.
Later when you start flight ops, it might be helpfull to have some bigger waterborne UAVs available. That means you can launch more than two aircraft at a time. Those UAVs could provide sensor coverage while you have the deck free for real fighters.

Just a thought ...

If these waterbourne UAVs could be launched in the same manner as a Ballistic missile ie vertically from a silo whilst the boat is submerged then they could 'sanitise' an area before the SSCVN surfaces, advance scouts if you will. Recovery would be by conventional means only after the sub was surfaced, and if the area was unsafe the UAV may have to be sacrificed by ditching when it's fuel ran out, still a better option than exposing the boat to the enemy.

While we're talking about things that go in and out of the water, I would like to reintroduce one of my favorite never built ideas; the ballistic torpedo. A ballistic missle is fired at a ship/s and when it reaches its terminal phase, just before hitting the water, it relases MIRVed water-borne torpedos, dropping them from the air into the water where they independently target the ship/s. It solves the problems of a ballistic missle's inaccuracy and the fact that a torpedo needs to be brought very close by its launch platform, be it a sub or a helicopter or a plane. Its a carrier killing weapon, so I guess its not too off topic.

Any comments on fesability?

Well, it was not ballistic...but the Boeing Sea Lance was the same general idea. Long distance, surface or sub launched missile where the warhead was to be either a Mk-50 torpedo, or a nuclear depth charge. It was meant to replace the subroc and the asroc, but with the end of the cold war, the program was cancelled. It would have had a 1.5 mach speed and a 100 mile range.

The VL-Asroc replaced the Asroc in 1993 and is launched from the VLS tyupes on US DDGs with a Mch 1 speed and 15 mile range.

C'mon guys..Torpedos? Etc??..There maybe a thread about torpedos. So discuss that there. In this thread please discuss CV's. OK?? Thanks!:)

Ok, you're right. Sorry for slipping into a little...:eek:ff

So, getting back on topic with carriers, and with a flare of a radical departure from current philosophy...here's an entire futuristic US Navy Task Force centered on a submersible Sea Control Carrier.

One SSCVN carrier, one SSLPHN amphibious assault ship, on SSGN missile shooter, and two SSNs escorts.

Not beyond the relm of posiblity..but still very far into the future. A lot of engineering would have to be worked out. .But I know some folks at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics would be grinning from ear to ear just to "R & D" those bad boys!:D :D
