48 hours.
It’s said that only a fire in the forward section continues to burn. It’s was in a compartment unable to be reached till now. There is a second hot spot possible fire aft.
61 were injured none hospitalized.
fire started fore spread aft. Ship is stable to early to tell damage.
Engine spaces secure no fuel leak.

Reportedly the fires are all out now. Also, I read that Rear Admiral Sobeck has said the ship can be repaired but that it's not clear yet if it will be - i.e. the damage could be so extensive that it wouldn't be cost-effective to repair it.

I'm very glad that no one died in the fire. It was very unfortunate it caught fire during maintenance, as that meant the fire-suppression systems were turned off. Then again, it meant there were fewer people on board at the time.

Is that routinely done?

South Korea’s 2021-2025 defense blueprint which was revealed yesterday provides some fresh details on the plans to develop an aircraft carrier capability for the Republic of Korea (RoK) Navy: The LPX-II project will be a dedicated light aircraft carrier for F-35B, it will not be an amphibious assault ship.

Charles de Gaulle carrier back at sea after “COVID-19 adjustments”
The French Navy (Marine Nationale)'s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier received a number of health safety improvements this summer in order to make it more resilient to the COVID-19 epidemic, French minister of the armed forces said on Sunday. Hundreds of crewmembers tested positive back in April.

As I mentioned in an earlier post [#4,020], when assessing the capability of an aircraft carrier we need to look firstly at the ship itself and the aircraft it is operating. The U.S. military has made much of the “Lightning Carrier” concept as a significant capability. The LHA/LHD + F-35B system (“Lightning Carriers”) - a V/STOL aircraft carrier - combines a very good amphibious assault ship and a stealthy strike fighter that at maturity will be a very fine aircraft. However, as an aircraft carrier system there are some significant issues.

The vessel itself:

- low 20kts speed

- position of port side lift can impact flight operations

- no sky jump likely reduces F-35B range/payload performance

The aircraft (F-35B):

- no folding wing results in a larger footprint than would otherwise be (Note the F-35B has a larger footprint than a folded F-35C)

- no internal gun (addition of stealthy external gun pod adds approx. 383kgs and likely impacts RCS, to an unknown degree)

- no ability to utilise “Sidekick” racks for additional AIM-120 missiles

- limited up to 1000lb weapons on outboard stations in weapons bay

Unknowns:

- what is the bring back load for vertical landings?

- what is the range/payload performance without sky jump?

- can the Joint Strike Missile be carried internally in the F-35B?
