Which goes to illustrate what the QECs are all about, they are Multi Role, Multi Service Aviation Platforms, able to support Navy, RAF and Army aircraft in combat, a far wider operational concept than the traditional idea of an aircraft carrier.

US aircraft carrier deployed over Iran remains outside Gulf

A U.S. aircraft carrier the White House ordered to the Mideast over

remains outside of the Persian Gulf amid efforts to de-escalate tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The Abraham Lincoln on Monday was in the Arabian Sea some 200 miles (320 kilometers) off the coast of Oman.

While U.S. Navy officials repeatedly declined to discuss why they hadn’t gone through the

into the Persian Gulf, they insisted they remain ready to launch any mission in the region.

However, Capt.

, the commanding officer of the Lincoln, also told The Associated Press: “You don’t want to inadvertently escalate something.”

The White House in May ordered the Lincoln and its strike group to speed to the Mideast. It’s also sent B-52 bombers and ordered hundreds of troops to the area.

Tensions with Iran have worsened since President Donald Trump pulled America out of Iran's nuclear deal last year and imposed sanctions on Tehran.

On the 30th anniversary of the death of

, the founder of Iran’s Islamic Republic, the Abraham Lincoln hosted journalists from the AP and other media outlets.

They spent some four hours aboard the vessel after a two-hour flight from the United Arab Emirates and were greeted by camera-carrying sailors who documented every part of their four hours on board.

The day before, the U.S. Air Force announced a B-52 conducted a training exercise with the Lincoln that included "simulated strike operations."

Thousands in Iran mark Khomeini's death by visiting his golden shrine south of Tehran. This year, Iranian military officials reportedly plan to guard it with Hawk surface-to-air missiles, the same kind the U.S. delivered to the Islamic Republic in the Iran-Contra scandal.

However, in recent days, the Trump administration has stressed it is ready to speak to the Iranians without preconditions.

Asked about why the Lincoln hadn't gone into the Persian Gulf, Rear Adm. John F.G. Wade, the commander of the carrier's strike group, said that his forces could "conduct my mission wherever and whenever needed."

He declined to discuss any specifics about that mission, though he said Iran had presented “credible threats” to the region.

"They do impose a threat to our operations, but also to the safety and security of commerce and trade going through the Strait of Hormuz and that's why we are here," Wade said.

The Lincoln famously served as the backdrop of then-President George W. Bush's May 2003 speech declaring combat operations over in Iraq, a banner reading "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" hanging behind him.

The majority of the war’s casualties came after.

On Monday, strike fighters flew maneuvers over the carrier. Accompanying the Lincoln to the Mideast are three guided-missile destroyers — the Bainbridge, the Mason and the Nitze — as well as the guided-missile cruiser Leyte Gulf.

Capt. William Reed, the commander of the carrier's air wing, laughed off any notion the situation was stressful.

“It’s just another day at the office,” he said from the carrier’s hanger as airmen worked on the ship’s fighter jets.

Capt. Chris Follin, the commodore of the destroyer strike group traveling with the Lincoln, laughed off any concern.

"I wouldn't want to go against that," he said, nodding toward the ship's sailors and warplanes. "Our mission is just to keep the peace."

Ahem, back in 1994 the USN outfitted two super carriers, IKE & America to carry US Army troops for an invasion of Haiti...follow the link for the full Monty and more photos...

In 1994 the USS Eisenhower and the USS America were deployed to Haiti with their decks full of Army choppers. The US was threatening an invasion if the Junta did not return power to elected officials, and the 10th Mountain Division and a unique combination of special forces were sent over via the two super-carriers to make sure it happened.

On July 31st, 1994, the United Nations Security Council passed UNSCR 940, authorizing the use of force to return Haiti back to its democratically elected government after

were quickly drawn up to deploy an overwhelming force to the island, both as a negotiating tool and for an actual invasion if need be.

As part of the plan, two US super carriers, the America and Eisenhower had their decks packed with various versions of H-60 Blackhawks, OH-58 Kiowas, AH-1 Cobras and H-47 Chinooks. The Eisenhower carried a force of 2,000 soldiers and 58 helicopters from the 10th Mountain Division and the America carried an assortment of special operations forces and choppers from the 160th SOAR 'Nightstalkers' for air support.

GAO: Navy carrier will be incomplete, cost more at delivery

Published: November 21, 2014

2014, see? they saw the PR STUNT (the Ford delivery) coming three years ago! another PR STUNT will soon follow (the Ford commissioning)

instead of requesting the vendor to deliver the product (and not jokes like the Zumwalt now and the Ford now), the USN accepts and commissions obviously unfinished ships, and I of course wouldn't talk about anything minor, I talk about for example the aircraft carrier unable to launch aircraft for years!

so, going back to that old article:
"The Navy plans to meet the $12.9 billion cost cap for its new aircraft carrier by accepting the ship unfinished and spending more money afterward ..."
I'll wait and see what the FINAL cost is, if they after coupla more years realized some 'transformational technologies' were actually botched etc.

Navy's Plan to Retire a Carrier Early Could Be Axed by New Bill

Members of the House Armed Services Committee have drafted legislation that would bar the defense secretary from reducing the number of aircraft carriers below the previously set requirement of 11. Paying to refuel the carrier Harry S. Truman is "crucial to national security," they wrote.

"The committee continues to believe that the nation's pre-eminent power projection capability is embodied with the aircraft carrier strike group," the draft fiscal 2020 National Defense Authorization Bill states.

President Donald Trump is

, Vice President Mike Pence told sailors in late April. That's despite the White House's 2020 budget including plans to retire the Truman decades early in lieu of paying to refuel the ship's nuclear reactor, which is typically done around the ship's midlife.

"As part of this budget request, we made the difficult decision to retire the [Truman] in lieu of its previously funded refueling complex overhaul that was schedule to occur in [fiscal] 2024," the Navy's 2020 budget documents state. Navy leaders planned to use the cost savings to pay for new capabilities, including unmanned vessels.

The House bill, if passed, will officially scrap that plan.

"No funding would go toward anything that would reduce the carrier force structure below the current statutory requirement of 11," House Armed Services Committee staff members told reporters Monday.

The bill also proposes $17 million for the Navy to pay for the Truman's refueling and complex overhaul. Lawmakers are also suggesting that instead of retiring a carrier and dropping down to 10, the Navy build up to a 12-carrier fleet.

"The committee continues to support an expansion of the aircraft carrier force structure to obtain the Navy's requirement of 12 aircraft carriers," the bill states. That includes support for a
