I would've thought they might have several spare engines on board, so to have an Osprey to bring yet another engine sounds like a fairy tale to me LOL

It's a matter of priorities. Jet fighters deployed operationally get max priority as opposed to squadrons back state side. If a Navy or Marines fighter is on a carrier or LHA it's front of the line for any spares even parts off other fighters from squadrons state side.

Like I said there are a few extra engines but not as many as you would think, and with that priority if one is used and then another it can take weeks for replacement engines to get from state side to the carrier by supply ship. So since there is this convenient airport at sea why not fly it out?

Based on this guys stories it's not a capability the Navy could rely on during your time in service.

Early C2A were less then the bird they became.
To transport an engine requires either a transport stand or cargo cage to prevent the engine from bailing out during carrier cats.
With E mail I imagine that paper letters are less important than they used to be. But packages are still popular and more critical would be spare parts.

Back in the "DAY" snail mail or regular mail was very important. Whenever that COD landed with mail aboard any carrier I served aboard the word was passed over the 1MC(Loud speaker or 1st means of communication);

"COD onboard with mail"...

I imagine that types would also factor in. When pops was serving the Navy has more of a mixed air wing then today. And he served on big carriers not LHA which have a smaller air wing.

Well if you have a flat top burning through engines my guess is by 4-5 in a rapid succession the Navy would be loading up an Osprey. Again the other method by supply ship will take a lot longer to meet up with the carrier. Although they can load more in one go.
