‘A GREAT DAY FOR BRITAIN’ Armchair critics should ‘shut up’, says Michael Fallon as he declares ‘big decks and fast jets are back’ on board new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth

...and he's right.

Naysayers and arm chair folks have held these "discussions" my whole life. They were doing it back when the Forrestals were designed and built. When the Kitty Hawks, the enterprise, and then the Nimitz too.

Now they are dusting off their criticizing and doing it again now.

But they are wrong.

The big deck carrier is here to stay for another 50 years...and I predict the US will not only build the three already planned and funded...but they will then build three more and ultimately replace all fo the Nimitz carriers...long after I and most of us here are gong.

And these ships have been designed to handle what they will need in the future.

LAser self defense. Rail gun self defense. The new 6th gen aircraft. etc., etc.

we may get lucky and get the smaller escort carrier too!

I have nothing against have sic or eight of those types of carriers out and to sea.

we already have one, and a second is ready to go in the Tripoli.

Those should be optimized even further IMHO for escort/air support carrier duties almost exclusively unless they are needed for humanitarian needs.

We do need a V-22 AEW and ASW version to round those out. We REALLY should have been putting that together for a long time now.

Jeff...

I sincereously hope I'm wrong but the trend we're seeing during the last 5 years or so is disturbingly similar to the pre world war period in the 20th century.

I agree something like an Ev-22 and an SV-22 would give depth to a pocket carrier Task Force group and would be invaluable to a TFG centered around an STOVL carrier. Japan, South Korea or Australia would certainly benefit of a plane like that.

I hope my eyes don't see a world war in the next decades or so (probably centered in Asia) but I'm fearing the worst...

It seems that the Russians want to resurrect the Yak-41 concept. I always thought it was a beautiful plane. Blocky and spartan like all russian designs of the cold war, but beautiful.

We will see what comes from this...
