2 Su-33 modernized seen on the net

Right now always announced 15 fighters, whose 4 Mig-29 and 10 helos.

The Admiral Kuznetsov goes to war

According to Russian media, Russia has undertaken to modernize its Su-33 carrier-based fighters, in preparation to deploy its carrier battle group off the coast of Syria. The aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov could join the combat zone in November, 2016.

It's an old warship that Putin has decided to engage Syria. At least that is what has just revealed the Russian press by announcing the dispatch of Admiral Kouznetosov the only aircraft carrier of the Russian arsenal, a vestige of the Soviet era, in the Mediterranean. It should be positioned off the Syrian coast in November 2016. By then, the Russian should have modernized Su-33 onboard.

Contemporary Kuznetsov, the Su-33, navalized version of the Su-27, is a former aircraft generation. Designed at the time of the cold war for the protection of Soviet aircraft carrier battle group, it has inevitably limited attack capabilities by modern appliances. Where an upgrade of its weapon system.

The Su-33 will be modernized with SUP-24 calculator similar to the one installed on the Su-24 during their modernization. This computer must allow the use of conventional bombs with metric precision, says the Russian press. According to the same source, the Mig29KR could be deployed for the first time on the aircraft carrier. Eventually, he was called to replace the Su-33. This would be the revenge of the Mig-29 on the Su-27.

Unbelievable!

In 2014 they spent over 65 million pounds to refurbish her...and now hey are going to scrap her in 2018?

The MoD should be renamed to be MAD, as in Madness!

@Obi Wan Russell What are these people smoking?

What are they injecting into their veins?
You have to remember the UK Government, whatever their political colour, is normally composed of people who have no idea what goes on outside the 'Westminster Bubble', and of 650 MPs you would be hard pushed to find any of them with Military experience (I can think of two off the top of my head, one Tory and one Labour. The former was a Lt in the Pay Corps and the other served in Afganistan as a RM Commando but neither are in jobs related to Defence in parliament). On the whole they know figures and money, basically the 'Price of everything and the Value of nothing', so any decision they announce has to be viewed in that light. Ocean is being 'thrown away' simply because her place in the fleet is being taken by 'Big Liz', and there is no spare money (or sailors) to keep her running.

We are already down one Type 45 due to 'manning issues' (HMS Dauntless, reduced to harbour training for the next few years), all a consequence of Gideon Osbourne's disastrous time as chancellor. This Government also promised to preserve HMS Illustrious as a museum and they've reneged on that (as I predicted here some time ago) and she's likely to be towed to Turkey for scrapping around October. I think overall the Navy has made to right calls in the face of a hostile Government, sacrificing older ships in return for guarantees about future ships. we may be losing Lusty and Ocean, but we are getting BOTH QECs as originally planned, and also long term plans have reinstated the figure of 138 F-35Bs to be purchased over the next decade.

Elsewhere there was some consternation a few months back when the MOD announced the Type 26 Frigate order was being changed from 13 hulls to 8, but the last 5 GP ships would be re ordered as type 31 GP frigates, smaller cheaper and more likely to gain export orders. There is now talk of further T31 hulls being ordered in the longer term which should help restore the numbers of fleet escorts available, after sixty plus years of continual contraction and "How many Frigates are we cutting this year?" we appear to have reached rock bottom (from even the politicians point of view) and all the speculation is about how to grow the fleet once more. Even the new OPVs ordered originally as a 'make work' project for the shipyards have grown from just three hulls to five (nearly got six, close shave there!) so I'm pleasantly optimistic for the moment :-O 14068286_1165428100170570_2093005117235476802_n.jpg 14046_819405898143307_2952327333400801174_n.jpg ocean_overhd.jpg 14039889_1168381986541848_8267424969434627296_n.jpg

oh really? what are the specifications of "Type 31", then:

(in case you didn't answer :) the design wasn't chosen, so "export orders" = wishful thinking)

EDIT
pulling from
UK Military News, Reports, Data, etc.
the three options:
but it would EXPENSIVE; RN is more likely to choose between
  • the derivative, called "Avenger" as far as I know, of
NOT ARMED FOR ESCORT DUTIES, or
  • the derivative, called "Cutlass" as far as I know, of
NOT ARMED FOR ESCORT DUTIES either

(FORBIN was the first here to post about those two designs: https://www.sinodefenceforum.com/uk-military-news-reports-data-etc.t2437/page-180#post-405753 and realistic info is available in

part Frigates despair)
and what I called EXPENSIVE above is "Venator 110"

I never said they WOULD gain export orders, just that the Type 31 was a cheaper and more attractive design for potential export customers than the original spec Type 26GP variant, and that is how it was sold to the politicians. I would rather have 5-10 Type 31s in prospect for the RN than possibly 'up to 5' Type 26GPs hanging in the balance... if any other Nation wants to join the programme so much the better but so long as the RN finally gets a realistic number of escorts that's what counts.

I've read
  • one (1) Type 31 is going to cost between 350 and 400m pounds (believable considering one of the Batch 2 OPV is over 100m pounds and:
    Armament:

    1 × 30 mm cannon
    2 × Miniguns
2 × General purpose machine guns
    according to wiki, and Type 31 designs I posted above would have slightly bigger hull and would be slightly better armed);
  • two (2) HDF-3000 Frigates (manufacturer: Hyundai, South Korea) were most recently purchased by Phillipines for $337m
if you want, I'll put links into what I said above, anyway I'll wait for the customers to decide :) as it's off topic of Aircraft Carriers III

French get ready before Russians and with a more big CAW

The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle resumed operational training in the Mediterranean

After a month of dense July, which has allowed the qualification of drivers 12 to the landing on the aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle sailed from Toulon Tuesday, September 6, 2016.

Aircraft of naval aviation, helicopters and fighter jets are expected on board that day. The 1,200 sailors from the aircraft carrier will train alongside those of the air group (Gaé) and embedded Staff. Landings by day and night, fighting against external threats, unannounced exercises and battle stations punctuate the crew of life. The aircraft carrier and its air assets will also participate in the exercise GABIAN which brings together many surface ships of the Navy. They thus lead to anti-surface fight.

Following this exercise training cycle, sailors will then be trimmed to drive their next mission, scheduled in the month. This will be the second deployment of the Year for the Charles de Gaulle and his escort. From November 2015 to March 2016, the carrier battle group had been engaged in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf to fight against Daech in Syria and Iraq.

according to NavalToday USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier ready for 10-month overhaul
U.S. Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) arrived at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) on August 25 for its 10-month Planned Incremental Availability (PIA), which will officially begin September 27.

“Because Truman’s last availability at NNSY was condensed, significant maintenance was deferred, making this a large and complex availability,” said Deputy Project Superintendent Bobby Leigh.

Truman’s PIA will total roughly 499,773 man-days, 51 percent of which will be completed by contractors, Alteration Installation Teams, and ship’s force.

The U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding a $52 million contract for nuclear propulsion and complex modernization work on the aircraft carrier.

“It’s a complex availability with a heavy contracting package,” said Truman Project Superintendent Mike Jennings. “We’re partnering with Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) in a way we’ve never done before.”

In addition to NNSY’s and HII’s work, critical work during the availability includes a contractor-performed upgrade to the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services, the Navy’s next generation tactical afloat network, which enhances operational effectiveness and provides better quality of life for deployed sailors.

Jennings said the ship’s crew is very experienced, and much of the NNSY 2015 Truman team is returning to the project.

“The project team’s motto is ‘One Team,’” Jennings said. “It’s back to the basics. We are accountable as a team and motivated to get the ship out on time.”
