Last time this many foreign ships docked in Qingdao, we lost Hong Kong.

I sincerely hope modern day PLAN is stronger than Beiyang of Qing. Meaning it can survive bullying at the high seas.

The Kaiser's East Asia Squadron was based there under the Admiral Graf von Spee. The ships were the cruisers Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Leipzig, Dresden, Nurnberg, and the Emden, the last becoming a legendary raider.

Only fitting to have the C in C of the current German Navy visit Qingdao for the event.

Are there pictures of that event? I had no idea Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Graf Spee ever visited Qingdao.

Given that it would have to be pre war (German fleet had other priorities during the war), that would be before Tirpitz and Bismarck, so the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau would have been the most elite ships of the german fleet.

On Wikipedia at the "East Asia Squadron" page you will learn that the Germany had a garrison in TSINGTAO, now named Quingdao, since 1898, after Tirpiz left the area. Incidentally, you can deduce why Tsingtao's beer looks (by far) like a German beer...

This was the old imperial far east cruiser squadron (with admiral Graf Spee commanding) not the kriegsmarine ships using the same names some 25 years later.

There are still 1 ongoing and 1 planned events over the next week. Please keep posting pictures.

Naval exercises on agenda for Russia, Asian countries
China Daily, April 26, 2019

China will conduct naval exercises with Russia and several Southeast Asian nations over the next few days, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense said on Thursday.

A multinational sea drill will take place on Friday in waters southeast of Qingdao, Shandong province. Five Chinese Navy ships will participate, along with seven vessels from Southeast Asian nations, Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang said at a news conference.

The daylong drill is the second phase of joint naval activities between China and the Southeast Asian countries that started on Wednesday. Ren said it is aimed at enhancing their cooperative capabilities in responding to pirates and medical emergencies at sea.

After the exercises, China and Russia will hold their Joint Sea 2019 naval exercise in waters near Qingdao from Monday until May 4.

The exercise will focus on "joint defensive activities at sea", involving 13 ships, two submarines, seven fixed-wing aircraft and four helicopters from both sides. Eighty members of the two nations' marine corps will take part in the exercise.

The bilateral exercise is expected to consolidate and further develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia, deepen the friendship and cooperation of the two militaries and improve the capabilities of the two navies to jointly deal with security threats. The exercise is not aimed at any third party, Ren said.

He also said the two sides have a plan to conduct their third computer-based missile defense exercise in Russia before the end of this year, noting that the first round of negotiations for the exercise took place in Beijing last week to set the schedule and training regimen.

Ren added that the missile defense exercise will help boost bilateral strategic trust, safeguard security interests and enhance the international strategic balance.
