What happened to the renowned "Japanese quality" maybe it's just an aberration, a slight number of medals that are defective?

Once might be an accident, but twice?

in the 200-metre individual medley, briefly mentioned to a reporter that his medal was also peeling. That video also went viral on Weibo.

I hope it's made in Japan, and not China. Otherwise you know what the MSM would say!

Apparently Olympic gold medals are made of silver and plated with gold.

You'd think that with such a massive budget, they'd be able to make solid gold medals.

I thought it was bronze or brass for ALL medals and then plated

I thought they were all brass-plated BUT...

Gold and silver are both very stable elements, with neither reacting with air, but gold is even more stable than silver. If you melted the medal down and soaked it in nitric acid, the silver would react to become silver nitrate but the gold would remain stable, meaning you could separate the two metals out.

A gold medal weighs 556 grams. At a market price of

of silver, you’re looking at about $1000 of precious metals per medal – $480 of gold, and $550 of silver."
