Re: Chinese 40000 ton helicopter carrier?

A thread exists for discussing PLAN LHD/LHA development.

But yep a 40k ton helicarrier won't be crazy if we consider 071s full load is 28k tons.

I wonder if we'll see a carrier and LHD/A under construction somewhat concurrently in the not so distant future.

Although at the moment I still think the VSTOL plane is unsubstantiated

There's probably a VSTOL project in the works but the PLA should allocate more resources into a bigger chopper such as the J-15 beforehand IMHO. Having a Chinook type of helicopter could immensely increase the airlift ability of the PLA and PLAN.

Well I'd expect a VSTOL project to have been studied (ala DARPA's pet projects) but it probably isn't high on the agenda of allocating resources.

The Koreans have 2 DOKDO class LPHs. And according to wiki they will build two more. Wiki is not always a good source of information.

..from wiki.
The South Koreans have talked about building another Dokdo...and a possibility for up to three in total. But I have found no evidence that they have ever started the second one and so only show one on my Dokdo page:

Re: New LHD

yes that is true, no second LHD was built by South Korea, i wonder why, having 4 of these would greatly enhance the Navy

Re: New LHD

Financial constrains in global recssion, 4x crew, and opportunity costs for other projects/ships are the most likely reasons ROK only has one LPH so far.

I would expect a fleet on the LHA to be WZ-10, Z-15, Z-8AEW, Ka-28, and Ka-31.
I would expect the PLAN to stick with either Z-8AEW or Ka-31 in the long term, but not both. Also Ka-28 will be unnecessary once Z-15 enters the fleet. Given its association with Eurocopter and China's improving confidence in its own R&D and manufacturing base, I doubt this helo would need to be paired with a more mature system for fear of failure. I would also add a non-AEW Z-8 into the lineup, in other words WZ-10 for attack, Z-15 for ASW, reconnaisance, and SAR, and Z-8 for troop transport and AEW. Three domestic models to ease logistics and remove the possibility of embargo.

Even if the Z-15 is rated at somewhere closer to the UH-60 (a marked improvement from Z-9 nonetheless), in terms of hull's ground clearance and internal space it's still a tall order to cramp in the equipment and personnel needed for AEW role.

He mentioned nothing about developing an AEW Z-15?
