Re: Type 071 LPD

I joust don't see any need for HQ-7 on LPD... IMHO 2 type730 CIWS are all that LPD would need. I mean LPD should be protected by other fleet assets...
For close in air defense, in a situation where leaker missiles get through the area and goalkeeper coverage, having a few short range missiles coupled with your CIWS is a very good thing. The US is putting RAM systems on these types of vessels for that very reason. The

hmmm...except that the San Antonio class is quite a bit larger, it is a pretty similar design.

Re: Type 071 LPD

The necessity for good point defence on amphibious assets can be illustrated by the Brit's experiences in the Falklands. The same rocky hills around the landing zone that protected the ships from artillery and anti-ship missiles also assisted the Argentine jets.
daggerbedivere.jpg

The RN's lack of effective point air defences was only matched by the Argentine's lack of suitible bombs (or more particularly fuses). Things have moved on, the PLAN/PLA has superior shoulder launched Ms to the RN in the Falklands, but then the ROCAF has flares and countermeasures, and Maverick missiles. At any rate the Falklands shows that in a shooting war where a REAL enemy typically is less risk adverse than in your training scenarios, you can't rely on disembarked ground based air-defences for total coverage and you can't expect effective air defence simply by bolting a few HMG mounts onto the ship's railings or stationing a guy with a shoulder launched SAM next to the bridge.

For this reason a multi-layered air defence is needed, with some form of short range SAM (HQ-7 or LY-10) forming the outer defence, and Type-730s and maybe automated QW-4 launchers providing the last ditch defence. And going by previous PLAN larger amphibious warships, I'd expect to see a 100mm gun for artillery support and/or a SMERCH MRLS as well.

Jeff, I think that all the actual Type-071 is quite different in detail from the CGIs that you posted - I'm going to draw what I mean.

Ok, here's my updated artist's impression. I've not included weapons or sensors, except for the obvious navigation radar.

Now I'd be interested in what's the dimensions inside the ship, meaning what can it carry. .... :)
hmm - by examine and looking to the modell it seems like some air cushion
(at sinodefence I only found the type 724,

Re: Type 071 LPD

seems to have four 630 CIWS configuration - one before and one after both funnels - and what's that in front? Additional one Type 730 CIWS at both sides ???
(last pic is to compare Jiangkai 525 Maanshan DDG and 630 CIWS)

Re: Type 071 LPD

If it has the Ak-630s, it wont have the 730. I presume that its the 76mm in the front B position

Great pics!!!!

I agree that those look like two AK-630 CIWS at the rear behind the funnels but the "Type-730" you've spotted under the green tarpaulin looks more like a small MRLS typical of those used by the PLAN for Chaff/Flare etc.

If interest, the rounded guard around the AK-630 is only partly stealthy - better than nothing at all but hardly as much care has gone into making that stealthy relative to other features.

Here's my updated artist's impression:

BTW. Can anyone ID the radars - they could be a good indicator of the weapons fit.

great impression!

ok, it could be small MRLS under the green tarpaulin (time will see), and two AK-639 CIWS at the rear behind the funnels;
but there are two tarpaulings before the funnels, one direct i front of the funnel and one in the middle of the deck - arn't there also two CIWS (it make no sense, to direct the CIWS only afterwards, the ship could be frontal attacked, where the funnels blocking defence fire)

so there is a must for defence in the front - aerea, and you'll see some CIWS at the artist impressions here
