071 LPD thread

re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

Are you serious? Once the PLAN subs come out, the Taiwanese navy will be a non factor. Most Taiwanese airbases would be hit by DF missiles too.

Are you serious???
1) It's likely there will be forces intervening against China.
2) Taiwan has AShMs, SSMs, and subs too.

Are you some TW fanboy? There are hundreds of DFs ready to fire the moment the order is given. Patriots aren't that effective as proven in the past. Once the runways are destroyed, the TW's air force is pretty much useless unless taking off from highways is a viable alternative.

It seems like a tanker to me. Either none or 2 more 071s will be built given the past pattern of the PLAN's buildup.

I would say it is extremely likely that the Chinese LCAC would be able to cross the strait themselves without the need of a mothership.

Besides, Taiwan's army is hopelessly outclassed by the PLA and even Taiwan's own generals acknowledges that its game over as soon as the PLA get ashore in any significant numbers. Which is one of the reasons why they have spent so very little arming the army. They are still relying on M60s as their best MBT for crying out loud.

The latest RPGs can probably take those things out, not to mention the dedicated anti-tank missiles the PLA employs on a massive scale.

As recent as 2008 one could still read comments such as "To invade Taiwan the PLA will have to engage in a hundred mile swim carrying their 40kg backpack " or something like that, or with the more mature ones suggesting that "it had been established that their ability to put forces on on Taiwan soil and keep them there is extremely doubtful."
Because the ROC forces have had decades to learn from Rommel's mistakes and turn those landing zones into killing zones of PLA forces. Meanwhile they can continually call in reinforcements while the PLA who would be only able to land a division at most would be starved of reinforcements.
So in relation to the present time, what's happened since then, to make those type of views redundant?

The M60s will not be used to engage PLA tanks. ROCA will use dedicated anti-tank missiles for the relatively small number of spearheading tanks.

From their training video it is clear that M-60s will be deployed close to landing zones relatively hidden for ambushing landing forces, their targets are landing crafts and troops disembarking from them concentrated together. They will fire flechet projectiles in groups (in effect acting like giant shotguns)

eg from 1:23 - 1:37

Taiwan has a number of amphibious vehicles and they could be fitted with modern anti-tank missiles that may just be equally distructive against landing crafts or amphibious tanks. They may lurk near landing zones or simply sent to meet the landing force with cover.

Given a sustained assault Taiwan will fell but don't expect a walkover with low casulties.

@ bladerunner, even as recent as 2008 people commented that the pla still used ak-47s as the main assault rifle and they won't be able to develop a stealth fighter until 2020+... Just sayin'

I don't completely disagree with your statement but ill reply later when I get access to a real computer, unless someone else responds first.

Ahem, now...

Because the ROC forces have had decades to learn from Rommel's mistakes and turn those landing zones into killing zones of PLA forces.

I don't wanna be picky, but wouldn't the PLA have had decades to learn from Allied successes?

Meanwhile they can continually call in reinforcements while the PLA who would be only able to land a division at most would be starved of reinforcements.

Any sea based invasion would be coupled with the massed use of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as air strikes on both command/control centres and military bases, not to mention likely choke points which will delay reinforcements. I don't want to get too hypothetical, but the PLA won't just land an 071's worth of troops and armour onto the beach and say "k thx bye".
If the ROCN or ROCAF can destroy landing ships moving continuously through the strait then yes the PLA would be in trouble, but I don't think they will let that happen in the first place. The real threat will be from attack helicopters and beach defenses, but if most of them can be identified before an invasion by helicopters or UAVs then the necessary munitions can be thrown in that direction.

The PLA will have to get assault and attack helicopters past enemy lines while also having fire support from PLAN vessels... A system like AGS, and a lot of DH-10s would be very useful here.

So in relation to the present time, what's happened since then, to make those type of views redundant?

I don't exactly understand this question, sorry.

Is it possible to defend key landing positions using modified towed CIWS system. If you have 30mm gatling it may be very distructive to landing crafts.

CIWS has very high rates of firing, even firing at short bursts, it will quickly use up all its ammo. And if firing continuously over long duration during the amphibious landing battle, it will probably jammed due to over-heating.

CIWS is designed for anti-missile and air defence scenario, it is expected to fire a few bursts totalling not more than a few minutes in the whole battle. Thousands of shells would be spitted out in these few minutes.

25mm -35mm auto-cannon/chain guns are better choice. Even the old bofor AA guns can be quite devastating when use against landing crafts.
