Some rubber strip lining will do the job, as can be seen in the above US Wasp Class LPD. Any leakage of water could be drained to a small reservoir to be pumped off the ship.

Are there anymore detailed images of the seals and the door connections? door hinge?
Probabaly.

Google is your friend in that regard. Take a look and do some research on it.

Well, hehehe, I would not characterize it as "rubber strip lining," though that gets the idea across.

But the material is something that meets all kinds of MIL-SPEC requirements for temperature, pressure, durability, salt water resistance, environment, etc., etc. and is probably a very tough liner made of of some specially designed and fabricated materieal for this job.

That's like "Macgyver" mode on. :p

I figure, even without the rubber lining, a tight fitting metal door would allow little water to leak through, at least not to the degree that would bother a ship of that size.

Re: PLAN Aircraft Carrier programme..News & Views

But that door and the way that it operates with a hinged bottom is impossible to seal.

During high seas, pumps would still need to be active to evacuate the water out of the deck?

Talking about 10 metre + waves during typhoon like conditions.

The ship wouldn't make it past sea trials if that was the case

That's like saying a fighter aircraft oxygen mask doesnt seal properly and in high G turn it will leak??

A ship is meant to be secure and water tight end of

Yes, but no one has answered HOW?

Everyone just says, yes. it is sealed.

It cannot be just a basic rubber poly based lining because it has to be pressure resistant. It could be Delrin but then you need to apply a certain amount of hydraulic force to pressurize it against a surface.

And the bottom hinge is probably a knuckle and rod, so, how the heck does that get sealed? exterior baffle?

The how is patently obvious. Actuators close the door and bring it into contact with the sealing material, under pressure, and it forms a seal. This can happen with the hinge not having to be on the "dry" side of the seal.

You are wanting to know specifically what the seal material is.

As I told another poster, the best you will probably be able to say (unless you have the proper security clearance and a specific need to know regarding it) is that the material is something that meets all kinds of MIL-SPEC requirements for temperature, pressure, durability, salt water resistance, environment, etc., etc. and is probably a very tough liner made of some specially designed and fabricated materieal for this job.

It's left to you to believe it or not...but the proof is right before your eyes in the numerous vessels that operate this way and the dry well decks they have when they are underway.

With all due respect to 1st Seamen Askiah, those doors and that book shelf hardly look like they could belong to a warship. They look more like part of a building on land or part of the crew habitation area of a merchant ship.
