From the recent photos of "999", it appears not all the accessible deck surface have anti skid coating; on that 071. Can anyone think of a reason why they didn't coat all the personnel accessible area?

Example: Area around the top mask, there are only a couple of "path" with (appears to be?) anti skid coating. The rest appear smooth metal surfaces.

I ask because I thought all modern warships (new build) will have anti skid coating of all area accessible by personnel. Is that a valid assumption?

Amen to to every bit of that Asif. The V-22 excels at what it does from the sea and from platforms at sea. It is changing the game, as it was intended to do...and I surely advocate for the AEW and ASW versions to be developed and produced.

The PLAN Type 071 LPD is an impressive platform. It is clearly modeled after the San Antonio class, but the PLAN has developed into the platform their own unique requirements. The hanger and the well deck are larger...and this does sacrifice storage space for more troops and equipment...but only because the PLAN saw that as meeting its mission requirements for the vessel.

I am looking forward to having a 1/350 scale version of this vessel to build and add to

.

BTW, Gallery models just released the first 1/350 scale San Antonio class LPD and I have it on pre-order for delivery this fall. It will go nicely with my US Carrier group built around CVN-65, USS Enterprise. I already have a group building around CV-16 and DDG-171 Haikou for the PLAN (You can bet that as soon as a Type 052D DDG in 1/350 scale is avaialble, I will add it).

Well, we had 2000 sq ft. But then we converted our car port into an extra bedroom, a bathroom, a living area Which we set up for our paretns should they need to live with us in their latter yearws (all of them are in their 80s now...my Dad having passed away in 2004) and added about 600 more sq ft. So about 2600 sq ft on a full acre of land.

My model shop is a pretty small part of that, about 10 x 12 ft. Plenty of room for building and storing the unbuilt models, but not nearly enough room to display all I have in mind...so I will have to find another area ultimately for display...and the "boss" will have to decide where that place is going to be in the house. probabaly in our "library" which originally was an open cponcept fron living room but that we closed in and made a librayr with amost all of our books in the house now in that one room. My 1/92 scael USS Constitution is also in that room. But in the end, that's for the "boss" to decide and any guy who is happily married for 35+ years knows who the "boss" is when it comes to household matters. LOL!

On the boats.

It will get the pennant number painted on when it is formally commissioned (it did a straight transfer from Hudong Shanghai to Zhanjiang, where these pictures were taken, without ever doing any sea trials).

Certainly these three Type 071 LPDs will give China the capability to perform amphibious operations at sea which is really a complex Task for even the more effective Navy's, amphibious landings have in the past changed the outcomes of battles like in Japan and Korea and General MacArthur really became the grand master of this type of warfare

Landing operations are effected by so may factors and so much can go wrong, sea states, weather and tides, even if one of these factors is not properly studied it could jeopardise the entire landings and the marines

Also knowing the local conditions of a landing zone like under water features and high walls that need scaling requires planning right down to the tea, operantqng at sea using a landing party is a new dimension at this level for China and I am sure China had learnt so much from these LPDs and had made iterations after iterations to perfect these combat skills

Well, the PLAN has had all sizes of LST type landing craft, up to and including the larger Type 072 III vessels to learn and practice amphibious landings over the years. I have no doubt that they are proficient at it.

But these LPDs and perhaps later LHAs are a differnt matter because now they can mix in and coordinate OTH air assault off of these vessels either individually, or in concert with large amphibious landings using their LCAC type craft.

In those types of mixed arms assaults from the sea, the PLAN is very new and have only had 3 years or so to work with. In that regard they are still in their infancy...but learning fast. LPDs and LHDs or LHAs are a whole new breed of animal that increase the sea assault capability by an order of magnitude and it will take time to get profficient at and efficiernt at intgrating that capability into their already long history of straight amphibious assault operations from LSTs.
