Nanchang shielded the Liaoning battle group from harassment flights from CVN-72 in May 22. Rumor has it that the Nanchang managed to track and monitor enemy stealth assets throughout the engagement from a distance of several hundred kilometers away.
DDG-101 Nanchang had an encounter with two F/A-18s from CVN-72 in a fly-by during the confrontation. Posted by @水獭军一般编 on Weibo.

Simulated attack runs on Chinese ships with SD…

???

I am not sure who suggested that, but the idea of it is ridiculous and the idea of Super Hornets doing simulated runs using SDBs as part of a maritime strike mission against a surface combatant like a 055 is not worth entertaining considering the sheer variety of weapons they would actually use in a real world mission.

A better question is what is so strange about the idea of a few jets buzzing a ship to begin with.
A year or so back we had a glimpse of a J-15 buzzing a Burke as well.
It really is no big deal.

What actually happened during that time? What F-18 was trying to do ? Did 101 lock the radar on F-18 ?

Who cares.

How rare do we think it actually is for jets to buzz ships and be in close proximity with one another?

@Stealthflanker isn't this your work?

Yeah some simple workaround. based on what can be gleaned from google earth and some books.

Not without weaknesses tho as shown in some other thread more TRM from bigger aperture means smaller beamwidth which means it take longer to search an area. But phased array can actually "defocus" the beam by changing the radiation pattern, therefore it's still allow time to be managed in cost a bit of antenna gain.

The bigger picture however is to share some simple methods for range prediction and their possible application, as i saw some accounts who "happily" praise AESA radars and showing books, but not really show how the knowledge in the book can be applied in real world. I would love tho if more people actually understand and use 4th root inverse square law more. As when you get used to it, it's very intuitive and can show relationship of radar range with many things. You can even model AESA cost performance tradeoff with that with some additional information.
