Maybe this first batch is non-IEP and the next batch is going to be IEP. That would be a reasonable flight distinction IMO.
Yeah that is how many rumours in the past have put it -- first batch of four being COGAG, later ships IEPS.

But we're still at an early stage so these things may end up being fluid in terms of numbers.
the above two posts made me curious about the current status of ships' electric propulsion in China ... the first two pages of a quick google search revealed just an older (

Chinese shipbuilders develop integrated electric propulsion technology

which is not specific anyway

Yes there are quite a number of articles in the last few years suggesting that significant advancements and breakthroughs in IEPS have been made.

Rear Admiral Ma appears to have a key role in IEPS as well (he is the same fellow leading the EM catapult)

if you posted links in English, I would look at them, but just, you know, I prefer the technical info like numbers, charts ... an experimental ship maybe built??
谢谢

no technical info that I'm aware of -- this is the Chinese military remember -- but some of the official articles about this in the last few years were in English.

Unfortunately they were literally two or three years ago so I forget which page on which thread they were from.

But the point is that IEPS progress does seem to have been made in the last few years.

I see ... it's not directly related to Type 055, but I'm fed up with articles extolling the Zumwalt and Type 45 until they were tugged
(I decided to leave it at that plus
  • no, I'm not naysaying China, and
  • yes, I know the turboelectric drive worked on the New Mexico one hundred years ago :)

The teething issues that Type 45 and Zumwalt have experienced would seem to indicate that China is wise to wait for IEP to mature.

yeah I've been hearing about 'teething' and 'birthing' problems

would seem to indicate that China is wise to wait for IEP to mature.
I would go even further and ask NOW IN GENERAL, NOT ABOUT CHINA, BRUNEI OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY if it's actually needed to move into a full-electric ship at all (I mean in the 21st century: only God knows about more distant future) while CODLAG works fine (note of course I'm not against changing for example COGAG, currently on ABs, or CODOG, currently on 052D, etc.)? I mean if the resources wouldn't be spent better on weaponry, crew salaries hahaha than on something which is doing fine anyway ... in a similar vein to what I asked (this Thread?) recently which was if ever-increasing "stealthiness" of modern warships would be of any use around let's say 2030 when the vessels will be located, tracked anyway (in a peer-to-peer conflict of course)

just my thoughts, I know nobody is going to take them seriously :)

I think the major rationale for IEP is to have full freedom in how to allocate resources between the "big consumers" of propulsion, radar and EW systems, and in future directed energy weapons and/or railguns. As a long-term goal that seems eminently sensible, certainly by the time that those railguns or DEWs begin to make an appearance, but it's all about timing and managing cost and risk in the context of broader requirements.

I'm not one of those who push the idea that railguns, etc. are "just around the corner!!!" but I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that such technologies will become mature and affordable enough by mid-century to be desirable not only for new-build warships but as an upgrade for large warships like 055. This first batch of non-IEP 055s will come due for MLU around mid-2030s. It's what will be available and desirable to fit then that should inform the basic propulsion/machinery arrangements of the design now.

I wouldn't yet consider the absence of IEP in Chinese service to be a problem, but I would expect it to feature in all major surface combatant builds by, oh, 2025.
