Whatever the size of the 054B, it needs to fit inside the Guandong Huangpu facility as they are among the ones contracted to build it.




That's going to put a damper on your size expectation, unless Guandong Huangpu is not going to make the 054B, and the 054B are going to be made in Hudong Zhonghua's old Shanghai yard instead.

Guangdong Huangpu has another shipyard at Longxue island where they built the 45,000 tons type 901 fast combat support ship. They have a large dry dock there.

USN's Perry-class frigates had dual Seahawk hangars on a narrower beam than 054A. It can be done if PLAN wants it enough.

These pics are awesome. For the first time you can see close up of the target illuminators, a hint of the size of their back end, and in relation to human sizes. They are not small. On top of that, there are two IRSTs on the rear corners of the hanger.

The PLAN has obviously been unhappy about the Type 056 general purpose corvettes and has carted them off to the coast guard. What exactly is the strategy/doctrine behind these Type 054A frigates. Since the PLAN is going to have 50 of them!

Long term or short term? In the short term, the goal is fill near by waters with so many redundant sensors for AAW and ASW that 3 US carrier groups simply can't overcome the huge PLAN numerical advantage. 054A is an important part of that even if they are not that advanced.

Long term, you need modern ships and personnel to build a modern navy. Eventually, you will need a whole bunch of 054Bs when you build like 10 carrier groups. And it's important to build the personnel structure to be able to operate and support that fleet.

Navies don't get built overnight. You speed billions and billions before a possible conflict in anticipation so that when something does happen, you are prepared.

It seems strategy and doctrine is changing so fast due to drones and hypersonics maybe the Type 054As should just host their 32 missiles someplace relatively safe, stay networked, and try to keep their areas free of enemy submarines, torpedos and UUVs.

It’s going to be tough for surface ships to survive a Superpower war, there is no where to hide. It could easily just come down to numbers of ships vs number of missiles each side can produce, so 50 frigates is a good number, to be heavily augmented with drone carriers etc.

It’s also a less threatening way to build your power, assuming the UVLS lives up to its potential, ‘50 frigates’ is a lot less threatening than ‘1,600 floating hypersonic missiles which nobody can intercept (except China)’.
